I usually shop at the local Safeway. I use their pickup service rather than going inside the store. I had placed an order for pickup on Jan.2nd and brought my own bags to put my food in. The order was brought out loosely in tubs and I bagged them in my vehicle and left. My next order was for Jan.10th and I again went to the store with bags for my groceries except that this time the employee had already bagged my items.

I told the employee that I didn't need the bags and wouldn't accept them. Yeah,I know it's only 20 cents and the person offered to refund the bag fee but my 71yr old brain had already kicked into another gear. I told him I was refusing the two bags and everything that was in them. Total value was only $38 but to me I was making a point.

That night I sent an email to Safeway Corporate with my complaint about their new procedure. Few days later I got a voicemail to call a woman at the local store. I returned the call and it didn't go well for the person on the other end. I was told that everything that leaves their store has to be in a bag due to Board of Health regs. I told her my order was all nonperishable items making her argument invalid. She also said that the bag fee wouldn't be refunded even though I never took them.

Before rudely hanging up on her I told her that while I lost 20 cents Safeway lost $38 and a customer of 34yrs shopping there.

That night I fired off another email to Corporate detailing my conversation with this woman and went into more detail about how their competitor handles this new procedure. I've done a few orders with King Soopers lately and my order is brought out loose and bags are offered if needed.

We are told to use recyclable bags and bring our own if possible. Now we have bags unnecessarily forced on us and charging us for them. Seems to me that this is a scheme to make extra money for an item whose cost was most likely already factored into operational costs.

To OP with all respect, They offered to refund the 20 cents to make up for their egregious mistake and then you still refused to accept the groceries. At that point, you are officially an unreasonable old codger. What more do you expect from them?

This happened on Jan 2 and you’re still butt hurt about this 3 weeks later? Get your thyroid checked.
 
Here in AZ, some stores are volunteering to charge for bags, my easy solution was to simply stop shopping at Savers thrift stores. Plenty of other thrift stores around that aren't trying to screw me outta bag money -- sure hope they go broke and soon

And you are concerned about .20 cents? I bet they will see a significant decrease in the value of their stock as a result of actions….

Didja forget about protesting outside the store in question in a chicken suit by chance? That woulda fixed them I bet…

Bring out a good book, fix yourself a favorite beverage, take a chill pill. Don’t sweat the small stuff!

I grew up with paper bags from the grocery, there recycled into school Book Covers, storage bags, cat toys, and fire place starters among other things. I disliked the plastic when they first came out and were forced on us and I would be happy to see them go away. About the only thing the plastic bags are good for is decorating trees when the wind blows them and putting soiled diapers or cat litter in for disposal.
 
I’ve been paying for bags in WNY for several yrs now. The 2 major grocery chains charge for them and Wal Mart started last week. Funny thing is Dollar Tree DOES NOT charge ??????? My whole life I was told to use plastic and recycle it. Now I’m told plastic is the Devil. NY is always at the forefront of the craziness. They are now trying to ban natural gas appliances after being told my whole life that natural gas is the ultimate green energy. They don’t realize in our area of the country our electric comes from natural gas and coal powered plants. You can’t make this stuff up.

The employee offered to refund 20 cents. The local stooge said they couldn't and wouldn't refund that amount. And they didn't.

Maybe I should go on Judge Judy and sue for the two bags I paid for but never got. :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Why a chicken suit? Did it have some significance in your life to make you think of it? Haven't been back to the store since.

Two major food chain stores in Colorado. Two different ways of complying with the new law. I chose the way that actually makes sense.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense to you.
 
I never realized how great I had it here in OKC! They still ask if you want paper or plastic and it's free! They also ask if you would like it carried to your car. The problem is....since I'm single I hardly ever buy much at the grocery store, its easier and not much more expensive to eat out.
 
The bags were never "free", they were just never listed on the receipts. Did anyone ever see taxes, rent, utilities, etc. on their receipts ?
