1964-2014...The .41 Magnum

So anyone buy any .41s lately???

I'm still looking for a Taurus Titanium snubbie but no luck so far...

I put one on layaway. Does that count? It's a Model 57-1, from about 1985 it looks like. Not pinned and recessed, but looks like it has never been fired. It's got a 6" barrel (breaking my own rule of 4" guns only) and the three t's.

When I mentioned to my wife that I was going to stop by the gun store, she asked what I was looking for. Not a thing. The only thing that MIGHT interest me would be a 41 magnum. I've got about 400 Berry's 41 bullets, brass, dies and such, but no 41 magnum gun. Sure enough I walked in and the first thing I saw was that Model 57 in the case. I'm sure they have me bugged some way or the other.

Crappy cell phone picture.

No idea why I wanted it, other than I have ammo for it.

Help from Superman!

Superman's love of the .41 Magnum, and his generosity is how this ammo came to happen.

I had a number of people asking for a general purpose .41 Magnum load. The problem is that I did not have a .41. Bob (AKA Superman) sent out his Model 27 converted to .41 Magnum, in my favorite 5" barrel length.

After some test and development, the 215 grain Hard Cast Semi Wadcutter was chosen at a nominal 1210 FPS. It has proven to be an accurate and easy shooting load. Lots of fun!

Most 210 factory loads run 1250+- fps from a 4" barrel... They aren't near as bad as the 240s from a .44 Magnum in terms of recoil but are still pretty "stiff".

Some of the 210s I have seen lately are really over the top...they get everything one can out of a .41 but followup shots are going to be slowed down...

..over 1500 fps from a 6"...

In my DA guns I've slowed things down to a max of high 1100s from a 4" for defensive purposes against 2 or 4 leggers... A hardcast at 1100+ is going to shoot thought anything I'm libel to encounter...and it's easier on the hands, wrists and elbows...

I got the gun out of hock, got it cleaned up and presentable, and took it to the range with 100 rounds of my reloads. Virgin Star-Line brass, Unique powder, and a 210 grain Berry's TC bullet.

It cleaned up pretty well. "It" is a 57-1 from about 1985 it looks like. I don't think it had ever been fired. Excuse the poor pictures, about the best I can do with my phone.

I had figured I'd fire off about half that 100 rounds, but ended up shooting them all. I've never fired a round of any kind of factory 41 ammo, and what I load would be considered mild at best, and of course the big gun soaks a lot of it up.

I was only shooting at seven yards, standing, DA, my standard I can see what I'm doing and not look too bad range.

I did have to adjust the sights to bring it right. About 4 clicks I think it was. A very nice shooting gun. I'm not to crazy about the target trigger. Not the best for DA shooting, but it will do. For SA, something I don't do often anymore it's great.

The brass has been reloaded at this point and is ready to go again.

Your Berry's bullet load with 8.0 grains of Unique is may GoTo target load. 950 fps from a 4" and excellent accuracy...

Nice gun and great shooting...

Bob
