Wow, I don't think I've logged into this form in over 8 years! But with what happened today, I remembered this used to be a good place a while ago.

Been going through a real hard time recently with a sick child who is receiving care out of state with my wife right now. They've been gone for over five weeks. H s had issues for 7 years now and it has really worn me (and my wife) down to the bones. Just feeling bad and stressed out so I figured I'd go and walk around Costco just to chill out for a little bit and maybe purchase a few things. Huge fan of Costco and spend a lot of money there over the course of a year. I've never had a bad experience and everything I get from there is top notch.

Well anyway I'm walking in today probably about 45 minutes before closing time and there were still people coming in. There's a big guy wearing a Covid mask checking membership cards. I show him my card, he looks at me, nods his head and I say thanks. I walked past him about 10 to 15 feet as I'm putting my card back into my wallet. I hear this loud, sir!, Sir!. I'm thinking to myself, is the guy talking to me? so I turned around and he's looking straight at me.

I said, yes, he says, do you have a firearm on you? Mind you, he's speaking pretty loud because I'm at least 15 feet away and everyone is looking at me. My first instinct was to lift my shirt all the way up to my chest and turn around and I said, No. He's like oh OK I thought I saw a bulge.

I walk into the store and I could feel my hands start shaking and my head and ears getting very hot. I'm already not doing good and this just put me over the top. I walked over, past the registers and asked to speak to a manager. Some guy who had a name tag on and the title general manager under his name, asked me what happened. When I explained it to him, he said oh no I'm sorry. I said, why would he do that? He said well, as you know, we have a policy of no firearms and if he thought he saw something that's why he asked you. I said that's not acceptable I know what the policy is. If I was carrying an open carry firearm on my side, then I understand. But who is he and what training does he have to try to decipher who's carrying a concealed firearm. He's like well he used to work security a long time ago and from what I know he's pretty accurate. I said you tell me exactly what training he has through Costco and what your specific policy is with regards to people asking members out in the open. He started to stutter and then backtrack.

I then said this is absolutely unacceptable. What's going to be done about this? He's like well, I guess I will have a talk with him. I said that's not good enough. I'm not going away until I'm assured, this is going to be taken care of. This is embarrassing and how he did it was extremely unprofessional. I said if my wife was with me and he thought she had a bulge, what is she supposed to do? Lift her shirt up to her bra and show everybody? I said I want to make a formal complaint. He ended up walking me into some back office and I filled out some paperwork and he said this will go to the store manager and we will talk with him and someone will follow up with you. He asked me if there's anything that I want. I said no I'm not here to take anything from you. I don't even know what you're referring to. He tried to offer me a pizza or a drink from the food court and I declined.

What is your take on this and how it happened? I was just taken off guard and in total shock. I guess I could've just said none of your business and kept walking. What was he going to do? Throw me up against the wall and frisk me? I did respond back to him right after he asked, and I said well maybe I should carry one considering all the crime that's going on nowadays, and he just caught his head to the side. At any rate, figured I'd post because I'm still irritated four hours later

I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill. The guy was just
trying to do his job.

Yeah, maybe I am maybe I'm not. Considering the circumstances I'm under…. possibly. But again look how he handled it. You're going to make a scene and have everybody looking at me at the entrance. And you say that's his job? Are you sure about that? Do you know exactly what his duties are as a membership card checker? Maybe to stop people from carrying firearms in. IF THEY ARE VISIBLE. What if I was an undercover, law-enforcement officer or something? the way this guy did it everybody in the store at the entrance and coming in would know about it. Just using that as an example. What other assumption is this guy allowed to make and then ask in the open in front of every customer coming in? That's the point I'm trying to make.

I quit going to Costco about 28 years ago. I don't miss it.

I can see this being annoying, especially if one is already frazzled by life. One does not need their business made public by such a contact; all he had to do is get your attention, wave you back over, and discreetly ask in a quiet tone. My main goal in life it be left alone. I don't like random people bugging me. No LE uniform, get impertinent, you will find my response impatient and/or offensive. Certainly snappish. Cops get a pass because I KNOW they have a job to do and might have stuff going on of which I am unaware.

However, it is part of his job, and not worth much to me.

Completely unprofessional and also stupid. What would he have done if you were somewhat schizophrenic and pulled a gun out? At most he should have said sir...are you carrying in an up close and subdued volume. If it happened that way I am sure you would have just told him...nope no gun. He was being a bully...scaring lots of other customers. an embarrassing you..JMO

My view is let it go.

My view is we define ourselves. If we have our own self respect, if we believe that our own view of our behavior supersedes anyone else's, and, very, very importantly: if we respect and are kind to others — please read that last phrase again — then, people who are rude to us are, well, unworthy of plaguing our thoughts.

I add, though, that one of my many weaknesses is hubris, arrogance. So it is a fine line.

I have no sympathy for rudeness, though.

Oh to be able to go back in time and respond, "Sorry I was just glad to see you!" Or "Sorry, I was just happy to be able to shop at Costco."

"He was just trying to do his job"

How about this scenario? You go to the store but don't buy anything. Didn't see anything you wanted. As you're leaving the store someone grabs you and flings you up against the wall and while they are holding you another guy starts frisking you.

"What in the hell!!??!???"

"We're sorry sir. We thought you were shoplifting."

Loss prevention officers, JUST TRYING TO DO THEIR JOBS.

Would you put up with that? He was just trying to do his job.

I wouldn't have stopped. I go in the store, I show them my ID card, I walk on by. I no longer have any business with the greeter. If he calls after me, once I have passed him by, I would ignore him.

I carried in Costco yesterday . I didn't see any signs but I wasn't looking for one either . Wouldn't matter .

I believe that it is included in the agreement you signed to receive your Costco Card.
In most states carrying a firearm in the store would amount to trespassing.

Not often I carry in stores but Costco and Sam's are two places I do. I won't leave a gun in the car there.Thieves do work those parking lots. Do they have no gun signs?

Sir, given your state of mind with family concerns in background going to store to maybe take mind off for a moment think i get it. To me you did as your mind and nature directed and am with you. Invasion of your space so rudely is tuff to handle. Glad after a long absence you turned to this forum and shared. You ask and we here are free to respond as we see fit.

This to say responces take many directions as seen. That's our prerogative. Opinions are like noses...everyone has one. Take'em for their worth to you. Admire your stance for being violated. Best to you and your bride with health concerns and dedication in doing the right thing.

IIRC it only becomes defiant trespass in PA only if you refuse to leave when they ask you.

Otherwise, their policy has no teeth.

As a general rule, I avoid places like Costco and Sam's Club. I rather pay a few bucks more and support a local business whenever possible.

My two cents here.

I have packed legally for years.

If I didn't feel a need to carry, I wouldn't. It is my life and the only one I'll get and I intend on going home at the end of the day.

Yeah, I've seen the signs posted but what they don't know won't hurt them.

If they are too pushy, I take my business elsewhere.

My response to such an inquiry as this is simple "What I have on my person is none of your concern, business, or problem." If I am detained or searched without probable cause then the legal ramifications to ANY business are $$$$$ and the bad publicity wouldn't be good, either.

If I am asked to leave then I do so with no other comment. My money is good at other locations who I am sure will be happy to relieve me of it.

The guy was following his company policy no doubt, but any challenge in a court over what the OP described would result in a lot of problems for the business...such as what was your reason for asking the question.

Businesses reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.

Let it and Costco go. Neither are worth even a quarter of the effort. In truth, if they lose a customer...they could care less.
