"It was the third of June...."

Think I may have posted this before, but I was high school age when this came out, and attending West Tallahatchie High School when this came out (actually think it was released during summer vacation). It seemed like WHBQ (Memphis) played this almost constantly. The Tallahatchie River divides the west side of the largely rural county from the east side.

Now, it seems nobody can say with certainty where Bobbie Gentry is - she has pretty much disappeared from any kind of public life. My understanding is that she was actually from Chickasaw County in what we called the "hills" as opposed to the Delta - however she may have spent some of her youth in the Delta. I thought, and still think, it is a hauntingly beautiful song. I hope she resurfaces some day soon.

I should note that the Tallahatchie River runs through some "hill" counties, as well as some Delta counties. We were impressed that "Tallahatchie" was getting this attention.

According to a article I read, back in 2020 the Washington Post did a investigation and found she was living in a gated community near Memphis, TN.

I think I may have read that as well, but from what I understand she is purposefully living a very secluded life, deliberately trying to stay out of any kind of public view.

I remember the first time I heard it.
My Bro and I were turning into his Memphis Apt.
He headed for his parking place.
We sat there and listened to the entire song.
What? Billy Joe threw something off the bridge?
About as near a perfect story as you can tell in in that amount of time.
A lot is revealed and much is left to the listener’s imagination.
I wish I could do that!

Well, a few days early but.........

Was the dark of the moon on the sixth of June
In a Kenworth pullin' logs
Cab-over Pete with a reefer on
And a Jimmy haulin' hogs
We is headin' for bear on I-one-oh
'Bout a mile outta Shaky Town
I says, "Pig Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck"
"And I'm about to put the hammer down"

Sorry, just not the same!

Probably one of the very few purposely allowed "one hit wonder" ever to be on the charts. Yet this song has been a staple of the 60's music revolution ever since it came out. And it will remain so. Where most groups are wanting to try for immortality by hitting the charts with more hits, it seemed that Bobby Gentry was good with her mega hit and left the music scene quietly and permanently.

Thinking about that song made me wonder. Do farmers get Social Security?

We have a family of four people. Brother got married and moved to a different town. Papa got sick and died. This leaves two women to work the farm. I kind of doubt they're doing that, so I wonder how they're surviving.
