Question 1. Just wondering WHY the 4040 magazines have a metal ball or rivet or whatever insert at top of follower. See picture. This is unique compared to the other single stack 3rd generation mags. Just seems like it should be same top end as the 4013 single stack mag???

Question 2. I think I saw a post indicating the 4040 mags could be used in a 3913. Obviously they are different caliber 40SW vs 9mm and the metal insert in the folower is not common to 3913, so how can this be so???

PS Question 3. I also think I saw a post that I cant find now (did I dream it) that said the 4040 mag would not fit in a 908 which I thought was same mag geometry as 3913?

Thanks in advance, Ed

I'm not sure what the ball on the follower does, but I do have a M4040 magazine with a 3913 follower and it works fine for range use so far. I wouldn't recommend using it for carry use though. Maybe the ball just helps the follower slide more easily.

I just checked my a few of my 39XX magazines and they physically can lock in the M4040, but I believe you would have to carefully modify the 39XX mag to fit 40 cal.

As for your third question, I've never handled a 908, so I am not sure what the difference is.

I do know that the 4040 magazines are sometimes very expensive, but the springs are still available from aftermarket companies, so a magazine rebuild isn't out of the question to keep the ones you have running. I also know that the 4040 is a great pistol and my favorite carry gun.

Actually they seem to be super cheap right now - NOS $17.95 plus shipping or $23.99 with free shipping on EB from same seller.

I read the 4040's slide velocity was higher and the ball detent made the slide lock function correctly . I've converted several of the gun mag warehouse 4040 mags to 3913 mags by simply swapping the ball detent follower to a standard 3913 one . I tested every magazine for function with no issues to report other than when action is closed they take slightly more force to lock in that a 3913 magazine. With the action open it's function is the same as any 3913 magazine . I'm keeping the followers for my future 4040PD purchase so it's a win win.

I'm not sure what the ball on the follower does...

The 4040PD mag has a special follower with an extended tab on the follower's left side (to contact the shorter slide stop arm) and a bearing insert on it's right side to keep it pushed to the left for positive contact with the slide stop arm.

.

To all of you who are converting 4040 mags to 9mm for your 3913/3914, I could use some 4040 followers. My new 4040PD seems to be eating followers because the slide stop is hanging in the down position. Going back to SW if I cant figure out why. PM me if you have extra 4040 magazine followers.

See my post #46 under 4040 conversion.

Sounds like the lower legs on your side plate are spread open.

Did you ever get it sorted out?

i have 4 mags but no 4040pd.
2 with ball and red follower(mine have flat baseplates)
2 without ball with black follower (1 flat 1 ext baseplate)
all 4 stamped M4040 on lower right side above baseplate.
So it looks like they were made both ways.
