School archery & hunting programs defunded

Don't have any knowledge of other states but in NC there is a program managed(may not be the right word) by the NC wildlife for youth beginning in jr high that has hunter safety and rifle, shotgun, and archery. Their season ends with competition starting with regional and goes to a state championship. Sadly there may not be enough people affected by this to make a difference, there must be a big change in voting habits, it seems that a lot of people just don't believe that these politicians will actually do what they say they will do and end up with the same people making laws year after year.

I have always held the belief that kids introduced to guns and gun safety at an early age are less likely to become a statistic. And then I read this article. I don't believe everything in this article, but it does make the point that kids learning gun safety at an early age are less likely to become a statistic. Too bad DC didn't get the memo.

A long, long time ago, I was on my HS rifle team….in NYC. It was a saner time and it was acceptable, and even encouraged, for children to learn the Military Arts of archery, shooting/hunting, and even fencing…….. and we didn't have children misusing those skills. Today those same "Military Skills" are discouraged in many areas……and we have the problems we have…..a correlation? Probably not, but you got to wonder…..

A number of years ago , when I was teaching first grade, I did a "unit" on safety before sending the kids home for summer vacation. We talked about pool safety, fire safety, drugs, smoking,, etc. I was able to have a principal who could see the value in firearms safety also. I used the "Eddie Eagle" materials provided by the NRA. Simple premise.. stop, don't touch, leave the room, tell an adult. I received a number of "thank you's' from parents... today I'm not so sure it would have been allowed. We also have a fine trap shooting group of young people in our area.....

in the 70's in West Virginia when i was in High School .every year in gym class in the gym they would set up targets and everyone would practace shooting Bow and arrows inside during the winter . , for two or three weeks ,a lot of us kids bow hunted for deer ,so some of the guys brought their deer hunting bows to school to shoot in gym class, our gym was built out of sandstone rocks by the 1930's CCC no arrow was going to go thru that rock wall was same inside as outside ,no dry wall .the game warden would come to gym class every year and teach hunter and shooting safety classes. our School library every month got the monthly addition of Guns and Ammo and shooting times magazine ,and 2 or 3 differant hunting magazines for us boys to read .sadley ,I bet they don do any of that now
