Best 9mm SD load

I shoot Fiocchi 115 gr. in all my 9mms. I have Federal JHP that shoots to the same POI in my pistols and S&W FPC.

For me, it's critical that my practice ammo and SD ammo do that.

Military issue hardball has been getting the job done since 1904...........

Shot placement!
He asked for the best. Not what might work.
And I'm pretty sure HP's aren't allowed to be used in war.
To each their own. I'll stick with my above choices.

What is the current feeling as to the best load that has actually been used in shootings. I have some Winchester 127gr +P+. Is there anything better.

Any standard pressure 9mm load will work fine. JHP probably preferred but FMJ will work fine too.

Don't overthink it.

Wow. That is a treasure trove......

Go find Dr. Gary Roberts' testing and recommendations. Pick a load that you can shoot, buy as much as you can afford, make it sure it works in your pistol(s) - 200 minimum, preferably 500 consecutive malfunction free rounds, and train.

Understanding where to hit and becoming capable at doing so, along with mindset, will mean at least as much and probably more than magic ammo.

I had some of that ammo and it passed testing; I carried it with confidence for years on duty and off.

Dr. Roberts' info is a treasure trove of real world information. I'll add that to my trusted sources.

There is no "best." They all work almost equally well to subdue a human sized target at SD ranges.

9mm FMJ, 9mm HP, etc. will work fine if you double tap someone in the A zone.

Stopped is stopped, no matter which kind of bullet you use.

Don't fall for the hype and marketing. With any caliber 9mm and above, shot placement of ANY standard pressure load will do a fine job.

Humans are soft targets.

Extreme defender

Based on size of potential wound cavity and lack of having to worry about unreliable expansion, the only rounds I carry in 9mm are Underwood ammo 9mm 90gr +p extreme defender. They are solid copper bullets that use fluting to cause outward hydraulic pressure. If you're curious about its gel block performance against other rounds, Google "2016/2017 joint agency ballistics test". The first result is a pdf file with the results of a test with 9mm, 357sig, .40s&w, 10mm, .45acp, and 5.7×28. Its an interesting read if you like looking at ballistics data. The Underwood comes out on top in every caliber that it's available in. Does best in .357sig IIRC

Er, no. That is simply not true.

Humans are soft targets.
Illiteracy is the problem with today's criminals. As good reading and comprehension skills are not longer taught in schools modern criminals do not read gun forums and learn that they are suppose to immediately stop their attack after being shot by one bullet.

Who was it who said, "shot placement is king, penetration is queen, and everything else is fairies dancing on the head of a pin?"

May be true but ignorance does not grant them immunity from being shot with any bullet that is well placed and penetrates thru and thru.

The main problem I see regularly on this forum is members confusing being lethal with stopping power. It may be of no small comfort to your wife, family and loved ones if your attacker dies 30 minutes after you do.

I've seen some videos.....

...of those in action and they look pretty amazing. The instructor I just took CC training from seemed to like them. I'm not quite ready to embrace them yet. I wonder about over-penetration and real world experience. But they ARE interesting.

I doubt many perps are tough enough or have an abundance of blood that will allow them to live 30 minutes with 6 holes in their heart from a triple tap of FMJ ammo from a .32 or .380 ACP or 9mm.

My former agency issues Federal Premium LE 147 grain HST hollow points.

If full metal jacket summer, so great, why isn't the FBI ATF local police and every other law enforcement agency in the country using them?
