Stags or Ivories?

At the Symposium in June a set of ivory N frame pre-war service style stocks showed up (thank you Jim Brewster) and I thought they might work on one of my older N frames. So, stay with the stag or go to the ivory? Given a set of three I think the ivory should stay. Neither the stags or the ivory are a perfect fit and I don't know that the stags were original when the gun was engraved.

I had a pair like yours and couldnt decide. I liked them both. Forced me to buy another gun.

(neither guns are as nice as yours, though)

If given the choice, ivory every time.
If ivory isn't available, I use "barkless" stag if possible.
If neither, the wood from the Holly tree looks really close.

Ivory is always the first choice. Stag looks and feels great but there's just something about ivory.

Pearl would be a third choice.

However, much like blondes, brunettes and redheads, it's really a personal choice based on prior performance.

Well, in keeping with the old saying about "Different strokes for different folks", the Ivory's okay as it is, but will most certainly be better after all us are dead and gone; and the Ivory has acquired more "character".

For now, the Stags have the Ivory beat hands down in the "character" department.

Needless to say, they both have some fence post grade timber grips beat all to Hell right now!-----and the guns are not too shabby with either!!

I like ivory but they distract from the beautiful engraving. Because they're brighter than the gun, your eye goes to the grips first. The stag on the other hand are darker and at least my eye goes to the engraving first. I was a commercial photographer for 55 years and know that you never place an object in a setup that's brighter than the object you're trying to get people to see. A persons eyes go naturally to the brightest element.
