What Deer Cartridge This Year

I also base the rifle on what scope is mounted. Short range I will use a low powered scope, longer range I jump up the the higher power. Plus it is a personal choice, I try to use every rifle I have.
All of my grand kids have a rifle to be given to them and I make sure they are good to go.

Which cartridge/rifle? Cartridge - Same as since 1984 ... .30-06 Springfield. Rifle - Remington 1903-A4 reconfigured by Chuck of Denver into a faux 03-A4. Came with the obligatory 2.5 Weaver. Immediate killer on deer. Using plain Jane 150 gr. Winchester Power Points gives one MOA. Every time used, deer dropped w/ one shot. Sincerely. bruce.

When I still deer hunted, we would hunt 3 states, Ohio, W. Virginia and Kentucky. Each state had their different regulations. I liked to pick something different to use each year in each location. In Kentucky I had some woodlots and then some retired CRP fields to hunt longer range and each "required" a different tool. My first high powered rifle remained my favorite, a well used old model Ruger M77 in .270 Win. Then I picked up a new true Marlin 336 in 30-30 Win because every hunter ought to have one. I tried my hand at pistol hunting in Ohio/Kentucky with a Ruger Redhawk, 7 1/2 barrel in .41 Mag then transitioned to an IWI Javalina 10mm with 7 1/2 barrel (I am a 1911 guy, so this became my favorite pistol to use). For the Kentucky long shots I picked up a Remington 700 Sendero in .270 Winchester, a scoped Springfield M1a with NM barrel and Remington 700 PPS in .308 Win. None of the deer i hit/killed cared one bit what I hit them with.

I took a nice Kentucky 8 point buck opening day with my Bergara HMR in 6.5 Creedmoor.
Now I'm on doe patrol with a .308 AR-10 until I get a doe.
Then I'll grab the Weatherby Vanguard .30-06 for the next doe.
After that, it will probably be an AR I built in .350 Legend, or maybe a .30-30 Marlin 336, I haven't decided which one yet. The downside to the 336 is that it isn't threaded for a suppressor like all the others on that list, and I'm trying to keep the hearing I have left.

Here in KY, I hunt basically every day of the two-week gun season, but I have a rule that I can only any given rifle to shoot 1 deer a year, just to keep things interesting. The Bergara is by far my favorite hunting rifle, so I generally start with it.

I'm big on the 'One Shot One Kill' theory. I will be using my TC .50 cal. Encore Pro Hunter Muzzle Loader, as I do every year. 2 T7 Magnum Pellets, 250 Gr. .45 cal. Shockwave Bullet/Sabot, Winchester T7 Primer. It's never let me down.

I’m a Browning guy at heart. I can choose from an ABolt II in 7mm mag, 308 or 270. I love that little 308. Short action just feels more maneuverable on stand. But my Canadian hunting buddy always used it so he wouldn’t have to deal with guns at the border. So I always reach for the 270. It’s a 1/2 MOA gun. I recently bought a Ruger 77/44 and threw a Vortex 2-7x32 on it. Super accurate out to 150 yds. If I’m doing the handgun thing it’s an Encore in .243.

You must have a lot of bearers in your hunting party to carry all that.;):D

Are u happy with that CZ? I’ve been eyeballing one in .223 with wood stock. I’ve heard and read nothing but good things. But I don’t know anyone who actually owns one.

Same rifle I have used for 35 years. A 1949 vintage Winchester model 70 in 30 Gov't caliber. Just shot a mule deer buck this morning and used a factory Winchester 220 grain Power point. I recovered the bullet after it had travel @24" in the buck. Finished it off with a cartridge adaptor that fires 32 ACP ammo. I recovered a Federal Hydrashok and a Winchester Silvertip from the 32's. All bullets had textbook expansion just like printed ads.
