Bicentennial Texas Ranger

Probably to make money....with a cool model anyway, like all the Winchester model 1894 Commemoratives....my brother has one commemorating Lewis and Clark County, Mt...Winchester never existed during Lewis and Clerk's lives but, the carbine marked 1 of 10 is still super cool....they could've made it on that heavy beefed up 7-30 Waters action and chambered it in .356, and it would still be quite cool. I think the .357 Ranger Commemorate S&W is kinda cool and think it would be a cool production model-which would never happen because there are not many interested in that type of gun anymore.....I don't think the classic models flew off the dealer inventories...cheers

So a gun made in a caliber the Rangers never used in that gun will sell better than a commemorative of one they actually did use? And with only a few exceptions those Winchester commemoratives, and S&W ones for that matter, after factoring in inflation, haven't been very good investments. I like the 544 Texas Wagon Train Commemorative from 1986, where else can you buy a N frame 44 for $800, but they were terrible investments. The package ANIB was worth about $800 in 2016 and isn't worth much more today. If S&W can make money with the Texas Ranger commemorative more power to them. They're already advertised at well below the MSRP though so I have my doubts. And I think anyone plunking down $2800 or so for one is going to be a long time getting their money back. But different strokes for different folks is what makes a market, I won't be buying one though.

I wonder how many Heavy Duty Models had the chambers deepened to accept the new Magnum cartridge? I know of two. Not sure but I would bet at least one Ranger did it.

Yep, different strokes for different folks...I won't be buying the commemorative Ranger revolver either, but I think it is cool. I also think it is cool if others do buy it!

Commemoratives are dangerous for the pockets. Maybe they worth the effort, may be never. Just purchased for a friend this commemorative: Manurhin MR73, only 73 pieces made for the 50th anniversary.
5500 € (in dollars, something more than that : 6k $)
Who knows?.... IMHO, it is exaggerate, but our world is so crazy!

Nice gesture honoring the Rangers but obviously from the comments on the forum, the mother ship may have missed the mark.
Wonder why S&W didn't ask the Forum for input before the came out with it. After all, this group is the one that would likely buy these.

Because they would likely get 451 different recommendations and end up with what they have already built!

It would be interesting if someone with a dealer license would chime in and advise cost which used to be 22% under MSRP when I had my license. Distributor cost was another 22% so actual value would be about $1600. Would I buy one at that price - nope. When the small amount of anxious buyers have theirs, there will likely be many left that will hit the discount dealers, ie: CDNN, J&G, etc. Take the money and go on a seeking mission for originals that have already established a collector's market.

Maybe, but maybe not. The Rangers certainly used the 3rd Model HE 44s, RMs/NRMs and HDs. Probably some others as well. I would plunk down a pretty good chunk of change for a remake of a 3rd Model HE 44 with some discreet engraved reference to the Rangers bicentennial, maybe packaged with one of those tooled leather cases sold at the Ranger Museum. I suspect there are quite a few others here as well that would buy one.

I've never seen any commemorative that I really wanted, and they're all overpriced for something that you're not supposed to shoot. But, I like this idea, and maybe they'll make a plain one. It's supposed to recreate the HD, but there's no reason to make it in .38, because some bubbas would be reaming the cylinder to take .357! They are priced around here between 2600 and 2700.

Yeah, I would think your idea would prove to have a bigger market.
Something in the $1200 - $1500 range would peak my interest.

Many posts have been edited for disparaging comments about the lock and MIM parts. READ THE RULES PEOPLE!!!!

Any more comments in that vein will earn you a ding and possible time off.

My friend just bought one for the 3 grand price, ouch.. But he likes it and is happy. Not my thing especially for 3 grand on a lock revolver. Too bad Smith didn't omit the lock on this one. The factory forgot to put the letter of authenticity in the box. He called Smith who said they will send him one.

The one on GB sold for $2015, plus the taxes, Compliance Fee, shipping and transfer fees.
