S&W 57-1 pinned not recessed

I came across a gun today that was a model 57-1 pinned not recessed. Shop wants 1400.00 is this a fair price? There are small scratches on the gun and cylinder, the ejector rod end has gauges where pliers were used. The cylinder was not recessed. Any knowledge would be a great help. Thanks

I'm no expert but that seems quite high to me in the condition you describe. If someone used pliers on the ejector rod, what else may they have done?

Welcome and agree, price is too high even for a pristine model 57-1 complete package.

During the 57-1 era, the pinned/recessed features went away, but some guns ("transitionals") were made with one or the other.

Welcome to the Forum which is a great place to learn about all things S&W. I agree with the other comments that the price is too high, but maybe not much too high as the 57s seem to be of interest these days. Without box/papers/etc., which I wouldn't value highly anyway, $1200 would seem to be a reasonable price. For perspective I paid $1050 about three years ago for a 6 inch -1 (not P&R) with box/papers which appears unfired. Where I shop I would expect to find it priced at around $1400 with that price somewhat negotiable. Good luck.

Sounds like a $900 or less gun as you describe.

During the 57-1 period I believe there were guns that were pinned no recess, recessed no pin, both P&R and neither P nor R.

NOPE! Run! If it were in pristine ANIB condition with all the original accoutrements, Just maybe, and that would be a stretch.

I'd pass if the seller isn't willing to take less, like no more than $950-$1000. I gave less than $1400 for my 1968 (S prefix) vintage 6" M57 about three years ago , didn't have original stocks but was a VGC gun.

OP, you should check out the for sale area here. bbtrout has a most likely unfired 1980 6" M57 for just a little more than the one you're looking at. Also has a NIB 4" but didn't notice the price.

There's honest wear, and there's negligence & abuse.

Plier gouges on the ejector rod is abuse.
That would be a "just walk away" moment for me, unless it was very cheap.

I'll go you one better, I have a model 57 NO dash that is pinned but not recessed. That can't be according to S&W catalogue. I have the blue box, the outer shipping carton, and the wood presentation case still vacuumed sealed never opened. The gun has never been fired or handled and is one owner nickel finish till I bought it. Yep it is a odd ball transition gun.

Yours is a dash 1 and would be expected.

It's possible for a no dash to have one, but not the other P&R feature. No dashes ended in 1982, when the dash one started and the P&R feature ended and there are transition guns of both no-dash and dash-1 that will have one or the other, but not both features.
