9mm 1911s

I have a newly made Colt Commander in .45ACP. It is my favorite handgun. I see that they are also made in 9mm.

The barrel of my .45 Colt is not ramped, but is ... The only way I can describe it is "scallopped",... what would be the ramp has a depression running to the bore. I wish I new how to load a photo.

I hope I don't jinx my self,... but it has never malfunctioned... All sorts of ammo. all types of non-ball ammo...

So I took my new Springfield 9mm Operator to the range. It came with two magazines and neither mag would empty without at least one failure to eject. Good quality ammo, Blazer and Herter's FMJ. Didn't matter. Calling Springfield tomorrow. Hopefully they'll replace the mags. No idea what else it could be. It's gotta be the magazines, right?

Extractor or ejector. Highly doubt the mags are the problem.

Failure to eject sounds more like an extractor issue or weak sauce ammo working against a new recoil spring. What weight ammo? I'm a big believer in 124 gr ammo over 115 gr, unless the latter is some stoked JHP.

Concur with LVSteve.

If you qualify for Springfield's Firstline purchase program and can live with a 4 1/4" barrel, you can pick up the 9mm Ronin for $703.00 + tax. I recently bought one and it's a keeper for sure.

I bought a 10mm Ronin somewhat locally through that program just a few months ago, after looking for a few years. I almost bought a used one at a gun show for $200 more.

Virtually all 9mms run better with ammo that is at the upper end of the power range. Try some 124 +p and 147 grain and see how you do. Sometimes it takes some time to loosen up a new spring.

Bh, It's not the magazine. Once the cartridge is fed from magazine to chamber, the magazine's job is done. Your pistol should extract and eject spent cases no matter which magazine you're using, or with no magazine installed at all. More likely what LVSteve suggests.

I wholeheartedly agree with Doug M. about 9mms tending to run better with the more energetic ammo, especially the 1911s chambered in 9mm. With one exception, every 9mm 1911 I've owned utilized the same weight slide as the .45, 10mm, etc. versions. It matters. Some of the more lightly loaded 9mm ammo simply will not reliably cycle the rather heavy for caliber 1911 slides.

Ammo that reliably cycles every 9mm I've ever owned, to include 1911s, is the 124 grain NATO ball.

Springfield customer service is saying pretty much the same thing. Thanks.

Ok so my new Springfield 9mm 1911 had trouble ejecting 115 grain factory target ammo. Couldn't find any 124 but picked up a few boxes of Federal American Eagle 147 grain. Hoping to get back to the range tomorrow to blast through a couple boxes. Hopefully my new Operator will have no problem ejecting the heavier loads.

I don't reload so I'm pretty much at the mercy of what I can find on the shelf. Love to hear from you guys. Do your 9mm 1911s eat 115 grain ammo without any problems? Do you think mine will once it's broken in? Or will I like the heavier loads better and never look back?

I never had any trouble with light 115s in my Colt.
I typically shoot 124, though, because that's what I keep around.

So what is the "Gold Standard" in 1911 platforms nowadays?
I'm no expert but from what I'm learning Night Hawk, Wilson Combat and Ed Brown Custom seem to be the best of the best.

I should have qualified that by adding for the working man (or lady). The ones noted are on the pricey side for the poor old working folks. Have never shot a Night Hawk, shot a Wilson Combat years ago and was not overly impressed and a couple of years ago I shot an Ed Brown. I had my old Series 70 Gold Cup and had no problem out shooting the Ed Brown (no, I did not pull any to skew the outcome).

If you are handy with tools, files and stones then you can build your own custom gun. Some parts will drop in and some need some tweaking. My Gold Cup was good, but I helped it along, by doing a trigger job and polishing the feed ramp and the throat. The trigger breaks at 2 pounds and the gun will feed empty cases from the magazine. I have another Colt Government Model that I have assembled from parts and it is the same as the Gold Cup. Both slides are tight as a drum to the frame and the barrel bushing and barrel link have no play when in battery.

So my question stands what M1911 is the best platform out there for the working man to buy?

I think the Springfields are probably the best if you're looking to buy a 1911 without taking out a second mortgage.

I have to echo HOUSTON RICK's sentiment. I purchased an ATI FX9 9mm Commander about 6 years ago with the intention of converting it to 38 Super. For a hair over 4 Benjamin's, I was ecstatic! The conversion is currently on the back burner, but I am relatively happy with the ATI. The only change that I would make at this point would be to change the sights to a set of Novaks with an adjustable rear.

I'm a 1911 guy from way back. Got a bunch of them. But always considered a 1911 in 9mm as blasphemy. That cartridge just don't belong in that gun.
However, having seen a bunch of them used in IDPA by the gamers, I was curious. So a couple years ago at a gun show, I gave in to an impulse and bought a RIA 9mm. I really wish I hadn't. :(
Nothing wrong with the gun. It shoots great and operates perfectly. Its the Tact II model, which at the time was RIA's top of the line. I just don't like a 1911 in 9mm.
But I'm stuck with it. I made the mistake of buying it during Covid when everything was overpriced. If I sell I can't get my money back out of it.
Oh well, like I said its a fine pistol, just not my cup of tea. So it just sits in the safe. Someday my kids can deal with it.
Honestly, for a SA 9mm, I much prefer the Hi-Power. ;)
