I've been looking for a short barrel Ruger for some time and finally found one at the Cabela's Gun Library in Glendale Arizona. It's in excellent condition and doesn't appear to have been shot much. I wiped it down and ran a brush down the barrel and charge holes. Well I tried to disassemble the revolver for a more through cleaning but was unable to remove the trigger assembly, it's stuck. It probably hasn't been removed since 1982, the year it was made. Maybe a good soak or just leave it alone. Any advice would be appreciated. Mods, feel free to move to the Smithing section if needed.

Here's the story how I acquired this fine revolver.
While looking on the other Forum several Saturdays ago, someone posted about a S&W M14 he had just purchased from the Cabela's/Bass Pro in Glendale Arizona. He stated there was a very nice short barrel Security Six at a good price in the Library. I gave them a call and inquired about it and purchased sight unseen. I got lucky. It was shipped to my Cabela's for free and you know the rest of the story.:)

Great find. That’s a beauty. I have a 6inch blue and a stainless 4 inch both great shooters. I’m not familiar with disassemble procedure but I know it’s on You Tube.
Ruger will sent you a free owners manual. You can get a letter on it for $10 which will tell you when and where shipped.

With the hammer out, look through the a slot where the hammer sits in and you’ll see a little button in there. Use a real punch, the fattest one that will fit and not the strut from the hammer spring and push on that button firmly while pulling down on the trigger guard. It’s on there tight but it pops out if that button is fully depressed.

As for a good soaking, I give a good soaking to every used revolver I buy, even ones that look as good as yours. I bought a never fired 15-2 right before Covid and it looked perfect outside but it was sluggish. It was nasty inside. Good news is Rugers are very modular. I’d tear it down completely and let soak in some automatic transmission fluid for a day or two, then thoroughly blast inside and out with some non chlorinated break cleaner and then compressed air to make sure it’s all gone, then lube where appropriate. I’ve torn down the cylinder and it’s not that bad but isn’t really necessary. Taking the cylinder release button out was a bit of a pain to get back in so I’d leave that alone.

That gun at that price? Bubba, ya done good! :D
Unless the gun is showing issues such as a sluggish action, I wouldn't worry about a complete disassembly. Just shoot and enjoy!

I really like the old "Six" series DA Rugers. I've got three myself. ;)

I would disassemble or at least soak and flush. I've seen a number of blued guns that looked great outside but not inside.

Nice score!

I paid more for this Speed Six .38 Special, but I consoled myself with the notion the Tyler-T was worth something.

Like many others I mourn the passing of the Six series. I’ve never liked the GP100s, though I’m sure they are fine guns.

I've always loved the Ruger Security Six, outstanding revolvers! I've had quite a number of 4" barreled ones over the years, only one 6". I still have a 2 1/2" that was made in 1981.

I have a 1st year, 1972, Security Six that I got from Forum member Toyman last year. Before he got it someone bubba'd the back strap for reasons unknown. In a post somewhere a short time ago, I said this was my second best .357Magnum I own. If I lived where woods & fields were part of my daily life, this would be my daily hip carry. I bought a very beautiful M27-9 that is my favorite; only because it just looks so danged nice and I got it new. As far as how the Ruger feels in hand it feels like it was custom built for me.
markeb, you stole that gun! BUT, it's ONLY a Ruger!!! You'll like that gun out on the range fer shur! Good buy...

My local Cabelas now (for a change) has some excellent used guns in their Library. Unfortunately at ridiculous prices even for them.

I have owned both Security Six and Speed Sixes in the past. But I prefer my Smith model 66's. Still the Rugers are good guns and markeb got a steal.

The spring that holds the trigger guard in is very stout and it’s hard to get leverage on it. I rarely take mine apart.

You got an excellent deal on a great revolver. As has been pointed out, these are rugged revolvers. I have a 6" stainless that I bought new. To say it's been shot a lot would be an understatement as it was my centerfire Bulls Eye match gun for a while. It still locks up tight and shoots great.
