Well the day has finally come. I wired money on Wednesday, signed paperwork Thursday and seller signed Friday. My wife and I now own 50 acres on top of a mountain in Greenbrier County WVa. The plan is to build a home there within 2 yrs. I've mentioned it in other threads. We've been looking for the perfect spot for over a yr. We had a wonderful agent looking at and videoing properties for us. It's difficult when you live 7 1/2 hrs away. Funny thing is we put in an offer and tried to buy the property next door last August. It was only 25 acres and not nearly as nice. Our exodus from NY is getting closer. I feel my blood pressure going DOWN as I type this….. and before anyone says it. I have no intention of bring NY ways to a free state. I'm trying to escape it. First pic is the view we'll have from front of house. Well cut as few trees as possible.

Congratulations on your purchase. I didn't see a grocery store or medical facilities in your photos so I trust those things are a short drive away. You might want to position a few game cameras around your property to see what animals are going to and fro there.

Good deal. We had a place in the mountains of N.C. near Grandfather Mountain back in 90's but the COLD was too much. Spent part of summers there but was just not practical as we had health issues.

Colby, we're a 20 min drive to Lewisburg. There's a hospital and urgent care facilities there. Lewisburg was part of the attraction to the property. My parents are from the area and I know it well….. the property has lots of deer, bear and Turkey sign. No Bigfoot sightings. Yet.

Beautiful pictures, Sir. Congrats on living-the-dream. What is that man-made pond in photo 3?

If they show up, do not feed them, nor 'gift' them anything.
Word is, they can get really 'clingy' if you do that. :D

That's the neighbor across the roads pond. You can also see it in pic 1. He has a beautifully restored 1800s log home. He has about 250 ac. He appears to run cattle on it but there are none currently present.

Colby, funny thing. The sellers nephew had 4 different feeders on property. He and the seller used it for hunting. It's been in their family forever. Feeders are not legal in NY (hard to believe I know). So I'll have to figure out how and where. There's tons of hickory, red and white oak as well as alfalfa fields around. I think they are well fed. When we were there in June the bucks had nice racks stated already.

I moved from Cincinnati to piedmont South Carolina and have no regrets. Miss some Cincinnati foods but South Carolina barbeque covers a multitude of sins.

We get a snow accumulation every other year or so. Little cooler up in the WVa mountains in the winter but they still believe in freedom. Congradulations on your move

Heinz, thanks. We'll be spending winters in Naples FL. Probably head down there just before Christmas for the Christmas boat parade. Autumn in WVa is magnificent. But coming from NY I'm done with snow.

I am jealous! I am envious! I wish I was there! BTW, What is the address?

Ivan

Ivan, thank you for the kind words. It's been a dream of mine since I was a child spending summers on my grandparents farm. My dad left the area when he was 18. Moved to the "big city" to work At Bethlehem Steel and escape farm life. He spent the rest of his life trying to get back there. Two yrs before he died at 57 my parents bought a fixer upper there. He never made it back. I swore that would not be me. Fortunately my wife loves the area and was as anxious as me to buy a place.

What is your elevation? IIRC, our home in north GA is 2,960.

We have bears there too.

Congratulations Bald1. As ridge runner myself, having grown up in them there hills you will love the area. Although I now live in Virginia, my heart and family are in LA. (Logan Area).
Get out on the Hatfield and McCoy Trails, over 1000 miles, and some of the most beautiful landscape in the country.
