Picked up this great condition 629-2 4" Mountain Revolver off the classifieds from a friendly forum member. Tight as a drum! I swapped out the factory Pachmayr Grippers (never cared for them) for some VZ Tac Diamond conversions. Gave it a quick strip and cleanup (didn't really need it) and we're off to the range this Saturday. I've been told recoil with full house .44 mags is.... stout. Can't wait to find out!

PS: The S&W classified is officially my favorite place to buy and sell. We have a good community here.

Welcome to the Mountain Revolver Club - the few, the proud.
I bet those VZs will make your trip to the range an interesting experience. Been there, don’t that. I switched back to the Grippers. ;)

I still have one of my two Mountain revolvers, complete with box and goodies. Love the tapered barrel, real roll marks and matte finish.
I also have a few of its spawn, a couple 629-4s, 625-6 45 Colt.8E956F4A-3372-4612-96A4-BE4BA792B1A9.jpgC3F24686-518C-4E77-A637-B3213B03098C.jpgB917594C-56B8-46A8-8405-3DEBF9AE6208.jpgC29B80B3-B0FE-4A80-8D81-2EACA52E244D.jpg47E3E583-7042-4411-9457-0D54616672E0.jpg

OP , I was eyeballing that myself. Wanted it for sure but I’m in the process of thinning the herd a little preparing for a move. Glad you like it!

Congratulations JBR, that's a great looking revolver. I like the vapor blasted finish on the Mountain Revolvers over the later Mountain Guns. I may have posted this photo before, but here is a pic of mine with Culina stocks.

Are the later Mountain Guns the “matte stainless”, like on a newer 686?

I am growing towards these vapor blast finishes. I’ve found that minor scuffs can be easily remedied w/ some oil, a gray Scotch-Brite pad and LIGHT pressure. Makes em look like new with a little effort.

I look forward to reporting back once I’ve shot it this weekend.

Good looking Mountain Revolver!

I guess it's just the angle or lighting of the pics from the OP but his gun's barrel looks less tapered than most Mountain guns.

I'm not sure if the later Mountain Guns have the same finish as a newer 686 but they look similar to me. I'm sure someone on this forum will have a definitive answer. In the October G&A magazine Ross Seyfried wrote an excellent article on the origin of the Mountain Revolver. If you're a fan like me, it's worth trying to find a copy or you may be able to find the article posted on-line.

I've owned a 629-4 Mountain Gun, and while it is a great revolver I prefer the details on the 629-2. As CH4 mentions, the roll markings on the barrel appeal to me more than etching. Enjoy this Saturday with your "new" Smith!

Props to the OP for starting a cool thread and sharing his marvelous acquisition. Thanks to the rest of the people who have displayed their beautiful examples as well. I have serial number BDW0083 that is LNIB, but I can't enjoy it at this time, due to family commitments, away from my home. This is a great reminder of one, I look forward to seeing again in the future.

The 629-2 Mountain Revolver is a neat variation, it's the grandaddy of all Mountain Guns because it came first although by " first" it's not that it premiered something new as much as it paired a bunch of existing features into a package not offered prior.
Only weakness is that the 629-2 is pre endurance package.
The 629-2 MR version is a bead blasted type finish which is pretty but the downside isthat u can't remedy scratches in the finish with scotchbrite like u can with later matte finish guns, it also shows holster wear more.
The bead blast finish also makes the turn line jump out more so if u don't like turn lines be warned.
The barrel contours are generally the same as later versions although u do get actual rollstamps instead of the thin laser etching stuff found on later guns, you also get the old grooved tangs if that excites you ,
Lastly the dash 2 has the "Notched" frame at the front like the older narrow rib guns such as the older Model 15 and 67, down side is forget ever swapping a different barrel as standard 44 Magnum barrels have a wide rib.
In a pinch u could use a 44 special barrel from a 624 by shortening the forcing cone but those say .44 Special.
An interesting variation exists that have the old Magna porting with one long thin slot on each side of the front site, rumour is that SW sent some new guns to Magnaport who modified them , not sure if thats true or not.
Lastly the 629-2 Mountain Revolver is unique in that it's the only Mountain gun variant to have come with those Pachmayer grippers from the factory.

To further the Magnaport/MG mystery, I have a 625-6 MG in 45 Colt that I bought brand new, from an FFL who’s a personal friend. It came to him from the distributor already Magnaported. The code on the box is the same as the standard non magnaported version. Even if Smith sent a few MGs to Magnaport, I am not sure why they would have sent a MG chambered for the low pressure 45 Colt. Don’t really care enough to get it lettered.

Just curious, as I’ve seen the term “Endurance Package” tossed around a bit. What exactly did it encompass? I usually only see it referenced when discussing .44mag S&Ws

OP great gun a I do like those grips. While not a mountain gun, I recently obtained a 29-3 that had been magnaported and matte hard chromed. I’m not sure if done by magnaport or Metallife. TT/TH. Looks just like the OPs gun except not a tapered barrel. I had a new set of Pachmyers for it and obtained a set of factory grips from the forum. I had a selection of holsters also. My first .44 and I’m enjoying it.

I saw the original Ross Seyfried Mountain Revolver for sale a few months back, complete with a provenance letter from Ross, magazine articles etc. Very cool, but outta my price range.

Would also love to stumble on a 22 MR one day.
