The problem with snakes is they always surprise you. You never see them coming. Just BOOM they’re there and usually close. Nobody ever sat in a ground blind and whispered “ look here comes a nice Copperhead “. They ain’t like other animals.

The Coral Snakes I have seen in my backyard run from me. I have no use in chasing a snake that runs from me to just kill it. If rattle snakes where aggressive I would have been bit many times in my lifetime. Now Cottonmouth is a different story, the last one I killed lets just say I was backing up quickly while he advanced towards me until his head left his body.
I agree. The moccasins in my life have been super aggressive.

Heh Chief , at least it wasn't a gator . I had a buddy out at the Cape , he lived by the gator farm out off SR50 . His wife yelled at him , the back door is stuck . He tried it and then went out back to try and pull on it . He walked back and there was a 6ft gator lounging on his back porch , blocking the door .

The triangle head ID is easy to see. Most “ black snakes” are “ Chicken Snakes”, black on top with white underside. They can be sort of “ pets” as we had one in the spring house of our hunt club. Miss Sylvester” was her name and she had young ones every summer. There were No rats or mice around the house.
Bent over to pick up a pine cone and there he was.

Caught this one a few years ago trying to go under the house. Let him go in the woods behind the house.
Iggy knows what they're not.
Advice given to me was "Leave them alone." This advice also pertained to bald faced hornet nests, most wild animals I do not intend to kill and eat and drunks.

Those blasted water snakes are usually pretty aggressive too. Caught more than one catching bull frogs at night. I finally quit catching frogs by hand. Dangle a fishing fly in front of 'em...snakes won't go for 'em

Cotton mouths seem to be the more territorial/ aggressive snakes to me. I’ve had quite a few swim right up and try to get in the boat by climbing the motor.
I grew up near the LBL (Land Between the Lakes) area of Western Kentucky. Grandad's farm had a lot of harmless black snakes, rat snakes, corn snakes, green snakes, garter snakes and so on. Getting nearer to the lakes you start seeing more of the copperheads and moccasins it seems.
I never liked any of them,....... but Granddad wouldn't let me hurt any of the snakes we would find in the corn crib or barn rafters.
I didn't grow up liking any of them. I'll try and let them live around my place if I'm not certain they are a copperhead or cottonmouth, but if the wife lays eyes on one,.......all bets are off!
I don't tell her about the ones I let go, or the ones I take out. I just pretend like I never see any .............. I don't mind having a "good snake" around, as long as Sugarbritches never sees it.
