It helps to know the regs better than the powers that be. I'm not signing that Article 15!

"The true ability of Squadron Command will be displayed when you try to court martial me for 'Staff Sergeant has a bad attitude towards the air force'." An entertaining discussion followed. Five days later, I and approximately 150+ other staff sergeants received transfer orders back to the USA. I became a proud civilian again in August 1974. Oh, the fun I had.

Maybe it is just me, but I see a lot more Marine stuff (apparel, patches, bumper stickers, etc...) then I do for the other services. Why?

74 was a dark period, Dept. of Defense wide. I bailed in 71 but found a new home with people of like experiences (D Troop,1/239 CAV OH ARNG) in 75. The Ohio guard was having a hard time recruiting people after Kent State. I had a good time with a bunch of good people. Beyond that I was like summer help. I think I have 5 or 6 DD-214s. It took me 32 years to get 24 active.

I see a lot of that at the gun shows I do. I usually start out with "Hey jarhead" Then I give them a Semper Fi.

" Uncle Sam Ain't Released Me Yet" is also a good one. There was a unit reunion at the hotel in Savannah I stayed in last weekend. 9th Div. guys over there in 60's. They have it every year in a different city.

My unit, the 187th AHC did many combat assault with the 9th ID in the northern delta. Some hot night extractions were other worldly. The 9th was famous in my circles for getting into tight positions but we would always get them out, sometimes at a high price.

By the time I got there most of the division was gone, with one remaining brigade. They were a pretty scrufty bunch with their cut off sleeves and covered with dried delta mud. Their AO was infested with VC and some NVA. Nasty ones too.

A friend of mine has three hearts all from his tour in 1stBattalion, 9th Marine Regiment in RVN, better known as "The Walking Dead" a name given to them by Ho Chi Minh. Lots of units took a beating there. Another friend spent the entire siege at Khe Sanh, another garden spot.

Have never seen more than one M-60 on a Jeep or a MA Duce mounted on a Humvee..........

David Sterlings guys knew how to " pile on" Lewis guns on Jeeps. A very tough bunch. Read many many books on them back in 60's. They got away with much in N. Africa but Sterling got captured in Italy, not good.

LOL, we had a " backwards guy" in AIT who fell for the " ask the instructor how much air is in a M-60 road wheel"? He never lived it down through the 7 month school…

Lord knows how many times we were in the field or on a flight line working in the rain. They always told us to suck it up as Marines are "Amphibious".

Just found letters I sent to my parents from Vietnam. Had forgotten how bad the mess hall was as its in every letter. Got my wife to send me canned food and we had a SSGT that " made sandwiches" that were pretty good. The bread over there would gag a maggot but he somehow got some decent cold cuts. Memories…

Tommy Mcgarry was one of many.
One of the "older guys" who was dating one of the girls in our younger group.
He was KIA July 2, 1967 during operation Buffalo near Con Thien.
There was much weeping when the news spread like wildfire.

Served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, Third Marine Amphibious Force.

Took my salt tablets fairly regularly. Malaria tablets not so much, came down with a case of malaria and ended up in the Air Force Hospital at Udron. Came back about once a year for several years afterwards.

Malaria killed thousands during the construction of the Panama canal but there are other things to worry about in a fire fight.

As for the Army mess hall in Tay Ninh, powdered eggs and powdered milk are not very good.
