I recently picked up a Model 66-8 Combat Maghum and was wondering when it was born. The serial number is: DJTxxx.
Got it in a pawn shop for less than half of a new one. It looks like it has not been fired much, even the lines between the cylinder lock indents are really faint. It looks new on the inside, very faint marks from the rubbing parts. The only minor drawbacks are the grips are a tad slick, and the red insert in the front sight was dull, but a little testor's fixed that.
Thanks.

According to the Standard Catalog the -8 came out in 2014 so sometime after that. The new 5th Edition of the Standard Catalog will be out next month and there likely will be additional information as to production dates. Someone here may have more detail on the DJT SN series. Welcome to the Forum.

I haven't encountered a DJT Model 66 yet but have seen a DJR dated 11/2017 and a DJW dated 01/2018.
Did you get the box (plastic case) with it?

Yes I did. There is a number 032318 above the model, caliber type specs. Could that be a date?

I see these kinds of posts all the time on this forum. It puzzles me why anyone cares about the manufacturing date of a gun unless it has something to do with the perceived quality of the gun, i.e. pre-64 Winchester.

You can call S&W to get a ship date.

800-331-0852, hit the corresponding prompts to get to S&W Customer Service.

Tell the CS agent your serial number and they will (usually) provide the Month & Year when it shipped.

Thanks for the phone number, they were able to tell me in just a few seconds. It was made in 2018 BTW. I was curious because it looked like it hadn't been fired very much at all, either that or the previous owner was EXTREMELY meticulous about cleaning, didn't even show any wear or residue between the cone and the top of the frame. Had it not for the grips being very slightly slick, I would have thought that it was new. Think I might have stolen it at 7 c-notes.
Thanks again

Yes, this is likely the packing date for the gun (complete and ready to ship), March 23, 2018. With a popular gun it should be very close to the sales or ship date, the official “birthday” in S & W records.

Lots of gun owners are not shooters. They put the new gun in the nightstand and it stays there until they hear that suspicious 'noise' in the middle of the night.
