So...........been 5 years since wife and I were able to get out of Virginia to out-of-state daughters for visits due to our really old and sick cocker spaniel. The dog passed away in September and we have not found another yet.

So...decided to visit daughter who is a university professor in upstate New York, specifically Canton New York...waaaay up near Canada border.

Can't get to Canton NY from Virginia by car without travelling through Maryland, and Pennsylvania. I just checked "carry concealed" website and the rules haven't changed since last time I travelled (2019). Still no reciprocity with those states so "naked it is":(

In any event a very Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!

Can't even put it in a lock box in the trunk? Only thing I would worry about is that stupid law that you can't use hollow point ammo. My next question is, do they consider the "Reverse" hollow points to fall under the regular hollow point ammo?

A while back, met a Character DeLuxe.
Lots of tales to tell, but at the Height of the Native American Art Frenzy,
He and his wife traveled the Country in a Motor Home selling High End Indian Made Art.
So they drove into the Big Apple, middle of the Nignt and parked.
About 5AM, heavy beating on the door. NYC's Finest have questions.
Why the hell are you doing parking this **** here?
So they explained they were calling on clients, selling art, would leave before noon.
The Police, Realizing these folks had NM Plates, traveling with various valuables and cash. So they asked , do you have a Gun?
Wayne said he swallowed hard, gave it a thought, then replied Yes.
The Cops replied, take care of your business and get this thing out of here!
Their home here in ABQ looked like a Museum, and Wayne was absolutely positive that a Woman in Cuba, NM had a Walker Colt.
When Wayne was younger he made trips to the Mexican Copper Canyon Area and bought art from the Tarahumara Indians.

Happy Thanksgiving and have a safe trip. IMO follow all state and local laws, be aware of your surroundings etc. etc. You do not want to get trouble with a weapon inna unfriendly state. It will follow you.

According to Federal law...you can carry a firearm through Md...just put it in the trunk in a lock box. Pa and NJ too. Can you carry w/Va license in NY?? I was kinda hoping you were going to NY naked...in the city...you wouldn't even cause a stir:eek:

NO, NY does not honor any other states pistol permit.

Bad spelling!

Of course carrying and transporting are different. At least through PA and MD. Stored in the trunk in a locked box should be fine in both states, especially if you don't stop in MD.

Before we moved out of MA, we would travel via I-81 and had no problems with that short stretch through MD. I also have a PA carry permit, so that opened up some other states to me as far as carrying.

As you state, the problem will be NY. Since that's his destination, FOPA doesn't apply since it requires possession to be legal in both the state of origin and the destination. At least that's how I remember it. Like MA, NY requires a permission slip for mere permission.

Edit to reply to Skeet 028. NJ could be dicey, because while it's legal that may not protect one from arrest. That's why on our road trips we went west to completely avoid both NYC and all of NJ.

Just looked; Pa has reciprocity with Va. Edit; looks like we can carry there but you can't carry here! Strange

You can avoid Maryland except for 2 mile on 522 and 70.

Your problem is NY

I would not travel to NY if it meant surviving ITEOTWAWKI.

Maryland has always been a screwy state. The bad part about Md is some of the county sheriffs departments. They like to search OOS cars for drugs...If they say to you...do you mind if I search your vehicle. The answer is not no..the only two answers are... do you have a warrant? ...or you cannot search my vehicle without a warrant. Would you trust a guy that out of the blue wants to search your vehicle? I have seen odd things happen.

Pa is a shall issue state and requires no special training to obtain a permit, though a background check is needed. The lack of a training class may be why Va does not honor a Pa license to carry permit.

VA lost reciprocity/recognition with PA after a VA resident studying law at Temple had to shoot a politically connected thug in defense of self and others (search Phily Inquirer for Gerald Ung, I've always wondered if he finished law school) There are PA counties that will issue an out of state permit, but you have to apply in person.

VA does honor a PA permit.

My first Pa carry permit went like this...My sales person at the Wholesale place took me to the Police/sherriff station...don't know now. She said to one of the officers.. Hi Bobby. I have another dealer that needs a permit...got an application to fill out Did that...took some fingerprints gave him 5 or 10 bucks...gave me a copy of the app he told me don't shoot anyone today and got the permit in the mail...Been a lot of years ago...The wholesale place was in a very sketchy area. They sold military stuff too. The gal sales person had an actual uzi in her desk. I remember her...yippee...and that place...I got 4 mags for a Swedish K there. Next time I went there my wife was with me. Found a 57 T Bird for sale at a gas station not far away. Ran great...looked ok .. Price was right...so.... She got to drive it home. A galaxy far away...Bought two great cars on buying trips to Pa...Bought a 62 Vette in Buck Pa. . Divorce sale...Somebody was probably very POd ...Hey it was in her name!

The answer I was prepared to give in case we were stopped in MD was, "I am not at liberty to allow a search of the vehicle absent a search warrant issued by a court of competent jurisdiction."

Oddly, MD does not, to my recollection, require a permit for possession, but I don't recall if it requires one for transport outside a residence.

Sounds like Sarco in Easton, PA.

Your experience must have been some years ago as I was never fingerprinted in either county where I had permits.

Pre COVID, you had to apply in person, which I did in 2017 in Berks County. I was on my way to a friend's place in MD and stopped in on the way. I'd pre filled and printed the application and stopped at the Sheriff's sub station at the Reading Airport.

From the time I walked in until I walked out with my freshly printed license was about 10 minutes.

At some point during COVID, the Berks County Sheriff decided that he wasn't going to continue issuing permits to non county residents. That's about the only discretion the Sheriff's have. Fortunately, just about every county lists if they do or don't do that on their website. I found that Wyoming County did and it was the closest to my then home in eastern MA. They allowed the application to be filled out on line and would then call you to schedule an appointment. Five hour drive each way. I got there and was in an out in 20 minutes, new license in hand.
