'Tis the Season...

A very nice song stylist is (was?) Stevie Nicks but the first time I heard her sing "Silent Night" was in the middle of the recording and I honestly thought I was hearing Elmer Fudd.

I'm in my 80s and have heard Christmas songs so many times that I'm kind of tired of them all simply due to repetition. But one I've absolutely despised from Day One is "Little Drummer Boy". Not only is the tune annoying, but the lyrics are beyond stupid.

Let's look at the lyrics from Mary's perspective: She's about to give birth after a long, exhausting journey, she can't find a decent place to stay, and she has to deliver her baby in a manger. After going through all that, she'd probably like some peace and quiet. Does she get peace and quiet? No, what she gets is a some dimwit kid standing next to her banging on a drum. Just what every new mother needs! Just ask one. Yeah, I know the lyrics say she agreed to have him bang his drum, but I guess she was too much of a saint to say no. Anyway, it's absolute dreck.

Pa rum pum pum pum!

I like most Christmas music, but the one that I never cared for is:
"The Twelve Days of Christmas"

That song drives me to distraction!

There is one Christmas song I really like. It's Brave Combo's "nuclear polka" version of "Must Be Santa", from their album, It's Christmas, Man.
Years later, Bob Dylan covered it note-for-note in this amusing video:

Top two of my "Hate it and never" list in no certain order: "Blue Christmas" by Elvis and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" by Brenda Lee.

For me to get aggravated with all of the "Christmas Music"

Some of my personal "Traditional Top Ten" HATE IT COULD NEVER HEAR IT AGAIN AND BE HAPPY are

"Feliz Navidad", "Jingle Bell Rock", "I'll Be Home For Christmas" "Isaw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and several others whose titles I don't recall.

This list omits all of the stupid "satire" types such as "Grandma Got run Over By A Reindeer" the Mackenzie Brothers (sp?) stupid "And a Beer", etc. which , to me, are just repulsive on the face of it.

What say you?
A-men brother - yer preachin' to the choir here. I listen 90% to classical music (yeah, weird, I know...) and get little of that on my go-to station, but when I go shopping I often get a dose of what I call "Weinachsschlock" :( Now a good close-harmony arrangement of certain favourites I can enjoy but anonymous squalling over the 4" speakers in the supermarket... nope.

OTOH, I do like traditional big band music, and a couple of years ago I came across this full Christmas concert from the WDR Big Band which I'm re-posting here as it went over pretty well :) (Someone even identified the "cimbassa", a kind of keyed bass trombone - which I'd never heard of!)

The Raveonettes' "Christmas Song" is most excellent, as well as ELP's "I Remember Father Christmas", headphones or equivalent almost a must.
My lovely young wife has Hallmark Network on 24/7/365, and there's always some dumb Christmas movie on.
