Sgt. Mike Viet Nam Humor

About 7 or 8 years ago I was on my way to the Missouri river to go fishing on a gravel road and was stopped by some Air force guys in a Humvee, complete with machine gun. Thinking what the hades, then the the guy who flagged me to stop asked it I knew where missile site xp123 or something was. HUH. I said there are several around here but, I don't know anything about which is which. He goes we are supposed to be at site xp123. I said well good luck and drove off. 4 people a high dollar vehicle that burns lots of fuel, a machine gun and no map or GPS. Gotta love, it they they are supposed to be protecting our missiles. Plus, the fishing pretty much sucked, because there was so much moss floating by.

Words that you never want to hear for real!! That said I had a 1stSgt. when I was the Guard Chief at a Marine Barracks that though it was funny to hide practice grenades in various places with the pin pulled as a practical joke. Did you know that a practice grenade will fit in a coffee cup upside down on you desk? Or in the center desk drawer of a desk? And numerous other places! I kept a spare pin in my pocket, and on my duty belt all the time while I was there....

16 attaboys cancelled right then there in that pic!

AF will not locate any wires near their sites in the Helena valley as it would make them vulnerable. When you cut one they do get there fast, without a call. It's tough to run a gas line without knowing where stuff is.

There have probably have been folks passed over for promotion that have had poorly written Fitness Reports/Evaluations. I was pretty good at "wordsmithing" those kind of things and wrote a lot of those for my bosses over the years. Another term is "Gilding the Lilly".

Walks on water, changes water to wine, etc. etc. etc.

The worst OER I ever got was from my hooch mate in Vietnam. When I brought it up to him 30 years later he just got a goofy look on his face. That's OK, I made it any way.

R&R? Who needed R&R? My first tour WestPac started in Japan and included a month deployment to Cubi Point, PI. I requested a split tour and the second half was in Da Nang. When I checked in the folks in Admin (S-1) wanted to know when and where I wanted to go on R&R? I said why, they said with your RTD, you rate R&R now. I told them where I had been and did not need R&R....they thought I was nuts. My Second Tour WestPac started in Japan and when Nixon rescalated the war, we ended up in Thailand and rotated crews in and out of Da Nang. Our birds would fly a mission from Thailand to Da Nang and refueled and rearmed with more M82's and fly a mission back to Thailand. We kept a crew in Da Nang to reload & rearm the aircraft. We had liberty in Thailand every two weeks so no need for R&R. Got lucky as far as that goes.

It's a miracle you are not completely warped after spending so much time in Thailand. An Army buddy did a tour there flying RU-21's. He eventually came back down to earth.

As for that cartoon, Angkor Wat is in Cambodia, but I guess one could make it there with the right connections. I was deep enough into Cambot one day in the spring of 1970 that I could see the temple. The map I used labeled it Cambot, not Cambodia.

I lost 20 pounds. I was 5'7" and 135# when I got there.

I was in error I weighed 123 when I got to Parris Island. I was 165 upon graduation. That is a 43 pound weight gain. My Mother could not believe it and every where we went and there was a scale, I had to get one it. I was 5' 10" at that time.

Down to 115 upon graduation? Were you ill? I know a lot of guys lost weight, but that was because they were overweight to begin with.

I was not sick. I had just turned 17 and never been away from home and was not use to any food but Mom's home cooking.

I joined the Corps at 17 years 3 months old on a four year tour on 3 March 1969. A four year tour was the only way that they would take me at that age during Viet Nam.
