5 screw K 22

I am looking at a 5 screw K-22 6 inch barrel, blued, wood grips with the diamond cut and the medallion. The grips are the same as pictured in the Jinks book page 172, "125 years with Smith and Wesson". SN 142193. The box with it says K-22 Combat Masterpiece but there is no SN on the box, which is old and faded gold color??, very faded so not sure. I am not sure what I am looking at , maybe a Target model or maybe a Masterpiece. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I presume there's a "K" prefix to that serial number.

K yes. Also hammer is Bobbed upward.

Your description fits a K-22 Masterpiece, not a Combat Masterpiece. And the K-22 Masterpiece is a "target model."

A gold box is correct, but if yours has a paste-on label that says, "Combat Masterpiece" on it, then it isn't the original box for your revolver.

Serial number K142193 points to shipment in 1952. Compare the following confirmed ship dates:
K135728 shipped March 1952
K140909 shipped January 1952
K144532 shipped May 1952

hammer is Bobbed upward

Not sure what this means. If you mean that the spur of the hammer has an upward sweep, then it is probably the typical, period correct hammer for an early 1950s K-22 Masterpiece.

Pictures of all of this would help us clarify exactly what you have.

Yes, upward sweep, great information!! Thanks. When I have time to post pictures and figure out how I will be posting Pics. Box does say K-22 Masterpiece.

The target hammer was available for the Masterpiece revolver by 1952. The standard hammer did have an upsweep as the picture below shows both styles.

Pictures are always helpful when identifying a revolver, so it would be great if you could post a couple. As others have stated, you're looking at a K-22 Masterpiece (6" bbl.; target sights) from 1952. The gold box is correct, but the end of the box should be printed "K-22 Masterpiece Blue Finish 6 inch barrel" in blue letters. Here is my 1948 K-22 for comparison, the one you're looking at should be almost identical. Enjoy!

I think his point is that the OP is describing a K22 Masterpiece, so it’s box should NOT have a Combat Masterpiece label.
