Model 645 confusion

As the owner of a 645 and a 745, I always looked at the under cut of the 4506 frame area beneath the trigger guard with some envy. I was missing out on being able to get high up on the pistol, getting that desired low bore axis.
Until I got a 4506 some time later. And I really like my 4506, but it’s not as comfortable as a 745/645.
But then again, later…. I got a 4566. S&W rounded that area off. In my opinion, the 4566 is the best of the bunch.

I’m always on the look out for Pachmyrs for my 645. But so far, no luck.

That is a nice looking Model 645 you have and it still has it's original grips. Many owners would ditch the nylon grips and replace them with Pachmayr rubber grips, which did make the pistol less slippery in sweaty hands.
Not planning on changing the grips. Did that on my Model 18 to fit my hand more comfortably, put up the factory grips and can't locate them.

Wanna talk about transitioning? I popped 3rd Gen. guts and a Wolff 3 pound trigger return spring into my 645 for a vastly improved trigger pull, installed a Bar-Sto barrel and a modified Model 745 one sided safety, gnawed off the finger hook from the front of the trigger guard, dovetailed the front for a Wilson Combat white dot sight, and Novak cut the rear for an MMC adjustable. So, I had transitioned it into something entirely different, which sorta looks like a 645. Worked out swell:

That’s the best looking 645 I have ever seen. Amazing how much better it looks without the squared trigger guard. I may have to get up my nerve and get out the files.

Dan,

You can do most of the work on a bench grinder, if you have a light touch and are patient. Finishing work with a file also requires patience and a good eye for recognizing when you’re actually done. Then, lightly sand blast the results.

I’ve got a 3906 coming in this week. So, it’ll of course need to get de-hooked.

I like your post, except for the Pachmayrs part. I’m a BIG fan of Pachmayr Presentation and Compact grips for my revolvers and Contenders. But, Pachmayrs for autos are JNR (Just Not Right). So, you should consider yourself lucky for so far having no luck.
