I set up an appointment yesterday with Print Scan to get my EFT digital fingerprints. Got them done today, and already received the file.

Now I need something to form 1. Already have 10 SBR's, but never had a shotgun. I have a ONG 870 and a 870 Wingmaster that was my dad's. The one he hunted with all my life was stolen, and he bought this one, but never used it. Do y'all think a 11.5" 870 would be cool? I'd like to keep the wood stock, but the massive recoil pad would have to be shortened.

Did a fast photoshop cut on it. Thoughts?

I like it, but I'd go 12" so the muzzle was past the mag tube cap. JMHO

I'd have to buy a new barrel. Reason I'd cut it there is due to the ribs. It has a massive long barrel.

I think I have a black plastic pistol grip stock, and corn cob forend stashed away in a box I could use.

This gun has been shot a lot. There is about zero blueing left on the bottom by the loading area.

Aside from looks and something to photograph, would there be some advantage over a more practical barrel length? Not my place to criticize and it's your gun.

Just the fact I don't have one. Thought about buying a side by side, but a pump would be CooLer!
CDNN has brand new 18.5 inch 870 12 gauge barrels on Ebay right now for $109 including shipping...They are a non vent rib, riot style barrel and come with three screw in chokes, (not that you need those).

If the SBS is something you want to do, I'd buy that brand new barrel and shorten it and either keep or sell the original barrel.

I just submitted my eForm 1 and got the "in process" email. I really wish I'd got digital prints about 7 stamps ago!

If I keep the vented rib barrel, I can get a slip on front sight for it like I did on my Winchester 1200 when I had the barrel cut to 18"

Oh boy, yes! I carried an Ithaca 13" model 37 with open sights when in the NYPD Robbery Squad (Bronx Central Robbery. We went after heavily armed robbery teams, or so they told me...). That "sling" attached to the pump handle is to keep an overly enthusiastic officer from blowing his fingers/hand off should they become a tad too excited.

I carried slugs in the one I turned out with (in order to reach out and touch someone, should that have been necessary. Four slugs in the magazine, one stuck in the "sling" thingy.

Understand this, there is no advantage in having a shotgun without a butt-stock. Unless you can show me how you can reduce the distance from your elbow to your hand. Love that check-weld!

Oh, one final thing. The guy in the photo was much younger young me. Around 1980 or so.

NYPD, Tng Bx Cent Robbery Ithaca 37, about 1982.jpg

We used the Ithaca model 37 with either 20" or 13" barrels, both with open sights and the 20" had a sling (what if you get into a tussle while holding you shotgun, where you gonna put the darn thing?!?) and the Ruger Mini-14 in .223. All good guns.

I was issued a Rem 870 with a 10 inch tube and fold-over steel stock when I was on protective service teams protecting dignitaries and occasional loan to the secret service. We were deployed to harms way and that was a tool of choice replacing the Mp5, and other short guns that are not crowd friendly.

Our only ammo was military grade 00 Buckshot. The qualification course was 18 rounds starting at 25 yards and firing the last round at impact distance, fire one round, take one step fire, takes only a minute or two to run that course, try it, it will beat you up.

If I were building one, it would definitely not be a pump gun, too much need for both hands when you need to be moving and running. Of course nobody really builds one for real combat, just for range play and that one in 400 million chance somebody comes into your bedroom at 4 am, of course, your handgun is more likely for that event.

So, having fired them a bunch, you are not going to fire it, except for range play. Build it as you want. I would not put anything on it, but maybe a laser, they are point and fire, optics a total waste of time. And even at 25 yards, ours had no sights at all, but easy to learn to hit by just pointing the gun. Slugs are fun but basically a waste since the buckshot of all sizes do so well.

I cast my own buckshot at #1, 0, 00, and 000 buck, they are ez and cheap to cast and load and fun on the range. I also cast the Lee 3/4 and 1 ounce slugs, you just drop them in a shot cup and load them like birdshot, nothing to it.

They are short range fun with lots of noise, muzzle blast and recoil you can enjoy. Build it any sixe you want, the 10 inch was.... interesting. We carried ours in an Addidas bag with the ends replaced with leather and held shut by velcro so we could actually stick one hand in the bag and fire one time. Never did it. But had that option.

Enjoy.

I'd certainly agree with you on a shotgun having a buttstock. Worthless without one, except in the minds of those who have watched too many movies.

I have side by sides in 20 and 12, coach guns. They are wonderful for quail on the rise or rabbits in cover, I have used the 20 for doves very successfully. Both are 18 inch barrels with no choke.

I cut a pump gun for carry in a police car in the 70s, for grins my buddy and I took it dove hunting, and were amazed at the distance I could kill them without any choke whatsoever. That barrel was 19.5 inches and worked very well for buckshot as well.

What slip on front sight are you referring to? A link would be appreciated.

There are plenty of other guns that would be a better choice. If I wanted a semi-auto, I'd probably go with the Remington V3 tactical and put a stock with a full pistol grip on it or a Mossberg 990 Aftershock. If you want to stay with a pump, there is the Remington TAC 14 or the Mossberg Shockwave and put a full length or folding pistol grip shoulder stock on either.
