Best place to live?

I live in Rockford, IL where I came for work in 1996 and retired here. Because of the location of much of my family (3 of my 5 kids and 9 of my 13 grandkids) and the close friends that my wife has made its likely we will never leave. Despite the reputation of being an anti-gun state, and the reality that the Dems in control would like to take away whatever gun rights we have, day to day I feel pretty good about my 2nd Amendment rights. I carry every day, and rarely have to make decisions regarding places that are off limits for concealed carry. And the cost of living is probably lower than almost anywhere in the country. You can buy a smaller, older home in a decent neighborhood for less than $150,000 and a very nice larger and newer home in excellent neighborhoods for around $250,000. Big city entertainment and sports venues are within about a 90 minute drive in Chicago and Milwaukee. I live in the northeast part of the city, and within 5 minutes of pulling my motorcycle out of my garage I am nice country roads with few cars and fewer police patrolling the roads. And no hurricanes or earthquakes. In 30 years here there has been one small tornado that ripped up a few of my trees but did not damage my house. Most winters are mild with not enough snow to warrant snow tires. In reality, you could do much worse than where I am.

A downside is that the public education system here is really crappy.

I have lived in other places, but Florida has been a good home to me. My Florida is not the sandy beaches and palm trees, but the woods of the Northern part of the state, up tight agianst Georgia. We have everything you need and nothing that you don't.

After many years in Ohio, i found a home in Texas. No income tax (property taxes are high for those under 65 - not a problem for me), gun laws are all about as good as it gets. Prices are low, The weather is moderate (We do have hurricanes in the coast and blizzards in the pan handle,), Outdoors, parks and sports are as good as anywhere and employment for you and your kids and grandkids.

I lived in this trailer when I joined the Army in 1988.I looked it up in 2022 it was obviously still there. My bedroom was on the right.

Please note that the entire outside of the trailer is covered with moss that's what that green tinge on it is.

I went and looked it up this morning and I can't find it anywhere so somebody must have finally tore it down.

It was at 207 North Olive Street in New Port Richey Florida. It wasn't a bad place to live

As I mentioned before the Southern Blue Ridge -
There are two other places I would live (that ive actually been of course)
Maui & The Bluegrass Area of Kentucky
Of course Maui has changed quite a bit since we were there

Montana winters are brutal, we got grizzly bears, wolves and lions that will eat you and even those who moved here 30 years ago are called outsiders. My one step brother was born in Arco Idaho when my step dad was working there. My brothers and I still call him Spud from time to time to put him in his place. We are fine with any guns you want to bring however

25 years ago I might have suggested Maine. I moved back here in 2014 after simultaneous retirement and divorce. I cannot advise you strongly enough to stay away. The taxes are second only to California and the entire state government is insanely “progressive”. However, I’m the 3rd generation on this farm and too to start over again somewhere else.

Our population in 2010 was 625,879. Our projected 2025 population is 648,278. This growth is unsustainable.

I agree, your population density of 70 people to the square mile is horrible. Ours in 7.8 per square mile now and parts of the state are getting really crowded. In fact we now have 5 counties with over 30 people per square mile and the worst one has 57 per square mile with a total population of 151,000,, plus, there are 5 more counties with over 10 people per sq mile! Those 10 counties make up over 2/3 of the states population. and cover 24,881 sq miles which is 17% or our 147,046 sq miles of which 55,142 sq miles of is public land.

But, the 40 counties with less than 5 persons per sq mile and with less 10 of those being under 1 person 5 per sq mile, helps make up for those 10 super crowded ones. Garfield county which is just east of me a ways only has .2 people per square mile. 1100 people and 4668 sq miles which is 1/2 the size of the whole state of Vermont.

Thee county I live in that has almost 12,000 people and has 4339 sq miles but then you need to go over 100 miles from our town of 6,000 to get to a bigger city. Our largest county has 5,543 sq miles and 10,000 people.

I usually refer to Wyoming as "Gods country"

It depends on the kind of hunting you're looking for but we have some of the best big game hunting in the country.

Gun laws are good and I like the fact that we are the least populated state in the country. The only down side is the winters are long, cold, and sometimes a lot of snow.
Agree. I was stationed in Warren AFB, Cheyenne, WY. Winters were brutally cold. Left there. Miss the area, the people and the freedom of wide open space.

Bluegrass is still nice, so long as you stay around 20 miles outside Cincy, Louisville or Lexington... Frankfort too.

Yeah man, thats exactly what im talkin about - the farms up there are beautiful
We had such a good time at the Rolex/Defender Kentucky 3 Day Event in Lexington- we stayed in Georgetown because we had an RV
But man, just that whole area of Bluegrass Country was truly beautiful

Southern California is the best place in the world to live. Bar none.
The problem is that so many nut jobs agree with me.
You know, i agree with you - save Maui
San Diego is where I would call home
Its strange I just hadn't mentioned it because it's so freakin crowded!
But, if just talkin about weather alone, id probably choose it over Maui
But.... Maui truly is or was a paradise
They have no snakes there and for me, thats the difference 😆

My post was about total population...yours is about population density...apples and oranges...I know you hate everyone and everywhere outside of the perfect paradise muntana...but try to stay focused!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in North East Ohio. Very nice place to live. No extreme weather. Lower cost of living. Good Gun Shows. Places to shoot. A big lake if you like that kind of thing. The best chicken wings in the Country! Only two hours away from my hunting camp. Which is located close to Corry, Pa. So, I will also mention North Western, Pa. Beautiful country, lots of history, and nice people like in Ohio.
Ok ok YOU WENT TO FAR!!!!!! As a Buffalo NY native , I’m here to tell you that we share a lake. But there can be only one chicken wing champion. And that Sir is Buffalo NY.

That’s funny. I often say NY has it all. Coast line, lakes, mountains, farms, rolling green hills. It’s really beautiful. The problem with NY is that it’s in NY.
Actually I have to kinda agree with you. I've lived here (Rochester) all my life. I hate the cold and snow though. BUT!!!! We don't get hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, sand storms etc. We do get snow that you know so well. And we have arm pits like NYC (even though I'm a Diehard Jets fan) and Albany. So we have to take the good with the bad I suppose.

Rick
