Sgt. Mike Viet Nam Humor

Found this map among the others, thought a few would maybe enjoy. My map of Vung Tau is framed in the bedroom, the only good memories.

This is what Scotch, Whiskey, Bourbon and Vodka are made for!!!! Tastes better than the purifcation tablets that they gave us!
We had really good water at Chu Lai. The only problem was during the hotter months when you turned on a spigot you got a blast of chlorine gas. The water tasted like a swimming pool. This was complicated with everyone's hair starting to fallout. Complained to the Doc and he just said good it's working.
Oh the fun we had.

I worked with Vietnamese woman at NASA. She came to the US as a young girl as part of the people fleeing the communist take over.
When I mentioned Chu Lai she seemed puzzled and didn't know where it was. Then I found out.
I read this some time ago and thought it was interesting. Where did the name Chu Lai come from? It's not a Vietnamese word/name so how did it make it on the maps of the day?
"Before the establishment of the base, the area around what would become Chu Lai consisted of only a few small Vietnamese settlements and was not marked on maps. In early 1965, with the growing U.S. military presence in Vietnam and the need for a supplementary logistics base, Lt General Victor Krulak selected the site. When informed that the area had no existing name on maps, Krulak reportedly chose to name it "Chu Lai" using the Mandarin characters for his own name. The name "Chu Lai" has persisted under the current Vietnamese government, despite its non-Vietnamese origin."

A 1st Sargent with the 25th Mechanized found out the hard way, 1969. Don't let stupidity get your men killed. I met the guys that pulled the pin. Sorry. Not much humor there.
I was a chaser a Camp Pendleton and took an in-transit prisoner to the Brig.
His final destination was United States Disciplinary Barracks (USDB), colloquially known as Leavenworth, to start a sentence of 20 to life.
He did something like that, told me his story but there was absolutely no remorse for his actions.
You are right, a very sad story.

I've driven by the USDB several times. Never wanted to go inside. I don't know if the incident with those 25th guys ever made the nightly news back in The World. There was no remorse then either. For them it was just something that needed to be done. I'm surprised they told me (an officer) but I was a friend of a friend. They explained exactly how they did it. A lot of things were swept under the rug. Sad and very spooky.

Seeing this cartoon, reminded me of this https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/ne...ing-scandal-inside-the-total-meltdown-at-tbs/ Lots of folks use to have problems with land navagation. I imagine it could be even worse now since most use the GPS in their phones and not actual maps and a compass.

Good one. My Dad was in an Aviation Engineer Unit in Italy in WWII, at the time a 1st Lt. One weekend the Co decided they were " going on a march" in mountains. Well after several hours the Co. discovered his map " had run out" and the unit was " Lost". Word went down that someone was needed to get unit back to air field. Dad had been in US Forest service and CCC and always had his compass. He had noted each turn and aprox. distance so he led the unit back. Never mentioned if he got an " atta boy" or not. Miss him…..
