Yesterday I visited a favorite gun shop to pick up some 1076 magazines for a couple of fellow forum members. As soon as the owner saw me, he said, I've got something for you. Priced at $699 plus tax, I didn't try to negotiate. He has treated me very well on other guns and accessories, plus this is a complete package. Here are the results. If anyone can narrow down a ship date for SN 107705 that would be great.

The Standard Catalog of S&W isn't too helpful. It lists the models 32 & 33 starting post war production in 1949 with #54479 and ending with #122678 in 1969. Fortunately, you provided excellent photos of the box that offers several clues. Your 38 RP is a dash 1 J frame. The J frames started in 1961 when they stopped production of the I frame so that give us a starting date. The lid of the box lacks the inscription "A Bangor Punta Company" in the lower right corner. BP bought S&W in 1965 and the new logo boxes started appearing the next year. So we have a most likely end date of 1966 or so for you revolver. The flat latch cylinder release was replaced by the new style that's on your revolver about 1966. So all the clues point to 1966 production. But the model 33 was a slow mover and could have sat in inventory for much longer before being sold by S&W.

Very nice model 33! I wish I had one this good in my collection.

Bastogne71, Thank you for your analysis and deduction's. The gun also came with its original receipt, but the first digit of the year is not legible. I believe you are correct with the 1966 assessment. The date of sale appears to be 8/25/x6. If I decide not to keep this one, I will let you know.

In have a 33-1 and it is one of my favorite woods walking guns. I mostly load soft swaged 148 HBWC bullets seated to 1.17" overall cartridge length with 2.7 grains of Bullseye or TiteGroup which matches the payload and velocity of .38 Special factory wadcutters.
