You guys are not doing your part

A buddy of mine owns a winery. He and his buddies blame some of the decline on the legalization of pot.

Never been much a drinker. Strictly social. Maybe one a month, usually with a cigar.

Over time, I came to the conclusion that I just didn't need alcohol and that it was not any good for my health anyway. So it's a very rare occasion that I'll have a drink. As a young guy, I was no stranger to tying one on and having a big time. But I grew out of that with work responsibilities. And when I had kids I decided that I didn't want to have alcohol as part of our family. I just didn't want that distraction, and that influence to come between my role as a dad. My wife doesn't drink at all.

In thinking it through, nothing really good comes from alcohol, and so many lives and families are destroyed by it. Someone made the comment that alcohol is the scourge of society, and there's a lot of truth to that. While many are responsible in their drinking, too many are not, and a lot of lives are affected and/or ruined.

And then there's the fact that alcohol is a poison in our body, and is classified as a Type 1 carcinogen just like smoking cigarettes, asbestos, radiation, etc. Sadly, most people are not aware that alcohol is directly linked to cancers, and that there's "no safe level of consumption."

Now I'm not judging anyone for drinking, that's not my place, or my objective, I'm simply sharing my take on the subject. I miss nothing about drinking, I still have a great time socially, and can hang out at a party, or bar, or out on the boat without drinking and still have a great time. In those settings I don't even think people realize that I'm not drinking. Added bonus is that my health is good, and I feel great every morning. Clean living…! 😃

I didn't drink for 14 years.
Then I turned 15!
Then I got married and had kids. Quit again-since the kids didn't drink ergo had no hangovers.
Then I hit 65 and Covid and discovered the joys of doing my own pours and relaxing outside under my oak trees listening to Greatful Dead tapes of old concerts and decided rigt then that **** it! I'm 65 yers old and I'm gonna drink! Period. I buy expensive Isla single malt and enjoy it. I buy Hendricks and enjoy it. I don't drink and drive, I don't drink on school nights and I don't smoke weed. I don't run around on my wife and cut the grass when needed. Man's gotta do something

In post #30 I posted the motto of my mother's ancestors. Ne Quid Nimis. Roughly translated it means not too much of anything. Moderation in all things. Of course, they were Scots, so their idea of moderate alcohol consumption may differ from yours. Sláinte!
