I wonder if the USAF swivel holster was the same.
Did NYPD cops HAVE to wear JayPee holsters?
The Jay Pee holster was standard for many years. Decades, actually. Standard issue was the non-swivel model, but guys often got the swivel. Made riding in a radio car much easier and looked cooler, too. Running with them wasn’t great cause they flopped around. You had to hold your hand over it as you ran. Early swivel models had a habit of breaking at the swivel and hitting the pavement. Jay Pee strengthen the stitching.
As time went on, the swivel was not authorized, but most got them anyway after graduation. Nobody really cared. Just like speedloaders before they were authorized.
I still have my academy issue non swivel and the swivel one. They will work great with any fixed sighted K frame or fixed sighted Ruger Six or fixed sighted Ruger GP100. Or a Colt I guess. But fixed sighted is key. My Model 15 or 67 will not draw easily from it. The rear sight gets caught. Takes some real wiggling.
They were good holsters. Don’t care what anybody says. That little strip of leather was a pretty good retention. Slide your thumb in and slightly turn it to free the cylinder from under the strip and it can right out. After some good break in, of course. I remember bringing my belt home and practicing to losen it up.
Only saw ONE cop with a .38 not using a Jay Pee. He used some Ssfariland holster that he was not authorized to use. He used the Jay Pee for qualification only. Again, a ghetto cop had more latitude than other areas. Nobody busted chops.
