Rant: Keep Right Except to Pass?

I do 26 miles on the Tri-state toll road in Illinois 5 days aweek one way. It is a great highway now with 4 nlanes and an I-pass, but, there are shmekels who insist on 55 in the left lanes. Now you know why we call them fibs.

I'm afraid it's the same everywhere --- clueless drivers in Condition White, or don't know the rules of the road, or are purposefully rude and or ornery. AZ has no driver training requirement --- if you reached minimum age (16, I think), can fog up a mirror on two out of three tries, and aren't so blind that you can't pass a multiple-choice eye exam, you're state-sanctioned to commit mayhem, drive rudely, or carelessly, or recklessly, and until you've become a multiple offender, there's no remedy available to the rest of us... And I'm not picking on teenagers --- offenders of all ages clog our highways.

Bozo's in the left lane going slower than the flow of traffic....In California the CHP and local Leo's call them "Homesteaders", as in homesteading the left lane. They are morons, plain and simple. I don't drive in California much anymore, just occasional visits, but if you are on the interstate and going less than 80+ in the left lane...may God have mercy on your soul.

I've had issues with Ohio drivers for 20 years.
I find they stick in the left lane and usually cruise at a crisp 10 mph under the posted limit.

I complained about people just sitting in the left lane in Virginia and one woman told me, "That's the cruising lane", meaning that you just sit in it and drive, unbothered by adjusting speed for people getting on & off the highway.

I thought that's what the center lane is for.

Right lane is for trucks, left lane for cars. That is what some are teaching these days. Few states will ticket for travel in left lane if driver is doing the speed limit.

Bad driving teachers some are. Speed in relation to the traffic is what
should determine what lane one is driving on, not the type of vehicle.
If one is slower than the general traffic flow, they need to be to the
right. No matter if they are a 18 wheeler, or a Corvette.
Myself, I stay in the right lane all the time unless I'm passing someone
slower than I am. I generally do the speed limit right on the $$$$.
Cruise controlled, GPS confirmed of course. :/
If I had my way, no one would use the left lane unless they had to
pass a slowpoke in the right lane, or they come across shoulder parked
emergency vehicles. These days many states require one to either slow
down about 20 mph, or move to the left lane.
Heck, some of the fastest drivers I see are in 18 wheelers.
if you block the left lane so they can't get around, many will get so
close to the slowpoke that slowpoke can count the number of bugs on
the trucks radiator.
As much as I detest tailgaters, I can see their point. People that block
the left lane are certified idiots and deserve to be run over. :/

Come on, get with it! The left lane is for cruisin because that's the lane easiest for the police, coming the opposite way, to ping you with their radar. The center lanes and especially the *right* lane is for passing, especially the backwards hat kids in the rice-rocket cars. :D

I just returned from a two week ride though California. On two lane roads when we'd come up on a vehicle most would slow down, move over to the right side of their lane, then wave us past. They even had signs posted to do so. On multi lane highways we saw very few slowpoke drivers in the left lanes. I'll rate Canadian and California drivers as the best.

My condolences for having to drive through Cincinnati...

Although my weirdest driving experiences have been in Indiana:

1:

I-74 W heading toward Indianapolis. A car enters the road, is only doing about 50. I try to pass, he speeds up. I drop back thinking, OK he was just taking his time to get up to speed. As soon as I drop back, he slows down again. Repeat a couple more times. I finally have enough, and ummm...slightly exceed the speed limit. He chases, trying to keep me from passing. Finally he gives up. No idea what was going on there.

2:

Driving around I-465 in Indianpolis. I am above the speed limit, but just going with the flow. Suddenly a motorcycle cop comes zipping by, starts waving cars over (but not me yet). A 2nd one come up and waves me over. We don't pull over immediately, but we all go another 1/2 mile or so to the next exit. The light at top of the ramp is red. One cop goes through, the other stops all the traffic and waves the cars through, following the first. Before I get to the intersection the one who stopped the traffic takes off. So the light is red, traffic is no longer stopped and has started moving again and I can't follow. So I just continue on to where I was going. I don't have a clue what that was all about.

Actually the problem would be solved if they just made interstates with three lanes instrad of twoLeft for passing, middle for traveling and right for paw paws & maw maws and those gettin gonn or on.
I'm getting tired of solving you guys' problems. :0
And as far as flashing your lights at me, nothing makes me madder. I know I'm in the left lane and I'll ge t over as soon as I can-but when I'm doing 75, you're tail gating me, and I'm trying to pass a line of cars doing 55-60, I'm NOT going to get over just to let you pass me. And that goes double if you're in a gold trim Honda and are a young'un :D If that makes me inconsiderate-so be it.

+1 for caj

Left lane slowpokes

Hey, if you get bugged by the ignorant, you should attempt to make time in an 18 wheeler, while attempting to keep from running over many of these selfish, unwilling to yeild dirvers. With an av erage of 400 horsepower, multiple gears to row through ranging anywhere from 9 on up to 18 speeds, and with weights up to 80,000 lbs, it is work, plus burns extra fuel to get a rig moving again at highway speeds after being shut down by some stupid SOB. We have maybe twice the horsepower you have, but close to 40 times total vehicle weight, but some fools can not stand to be passed by anything, even when they are not going anywhere in a hurry. On Interstate 75, I have always dreaded the Ohio registered vehicle, as well as the Canadian ones. Over on the east coast, Maryland, along with the Canadians are bad.

I travel I-77, R-19, and I-79 from North Carolina to Pennsylvania often enough to see about every condition and driver type. I-77 & I-81 jointure Wytheville VA avoid like the plague pre and after Thanksgiving weekend. Nettlesome I-77/ WVA-Turnpike three lane sections no trucks left hand lane signage ignored. You guess it three trucks abreast going up hill. All three roads are continuously under construction/repair at some point along the way. The tunnels don’t swallow people up but you would think so. New River Bridge Day you’re detoured to Charleston-WVA and on to I-79. R-19 descending from Summersville to Elk River you is in the right hand lane with a tractor trailer 3 foot off your rear end with the left lane completely open. Welcome to Pennsylvania thump-thump-thump-thump and some more. Other than that a pleasant a pleasant drive according to the spouse whom sight sees and naps most of the time.

I've driven all over this country and Florida is by far the worst. I did get a lot of satisfaction when I was "on the job" up north by issueing summons' for failure to keep right and for obstructing traffic. I suggest you google "state keep right laws" for a good read and check out what is listed for the state of Michigan if you want a good chuckle.

+1.I always drive in the hot lane[trucks get the others bumpy],and get out of the way when a car is coming up going faster than me.Oh,yeah,i used to pave highways in California for a living.

I don't think so Skippy. Maybe a lot more torque:D And certainly weight.

Some people just do not think. I try to be courteous to truck drivers If I am in the center lane and a truck is catching up I will go to the left lane to let him pass since he can't. ( I am not the fastest vehicle on the highway but I will run with the flow and don't get passed a lot) Providing no one is closing on me in the left lane or I simply speed up not to break his momentum. especially in the mountains.

Slow down, enjoy the trip. Driving is not a competitive sport, at least not on the highways.

The left lane is considered to be a traffic lane - not a passing lane - in many if not all states. Someone who is doing the speed limit in the left lane is under no obligation to get out of your way.
