I posted this on thefirearmsforum but didn't get much response. Maybe someone here can help me better identify this gun. My grandfather bought it back in the '20s from Bannermans. I think Sears and Roebuck also carried them. Note the pic in the old S&R catalog. Looks exactly like this pistol.

I cannot help with ID but thats a cool pistol! I play with some Colt second gen cap and ball's but you started something here, I do not have a flint lock, yet!

I believe that's commonly called a Sea Service pistol. There may be Belgian proofs on the underside of the barrel. Here's a few similar guns.

Thank you so much for this response with the interesting links!
I guess I should have come here first :)

If you could identify that marking on the lockplate; crown over DN, it might give you a clue as to what it is. I wonder what the caliber is,also.

The problem with the Crown over DN is that it seems everybody used a crown over "something".:D
It wouldn't be a proof mark (They're on barrels and receivers), so it must be an inspectors or property mark.
For what it's worth, the crown design appears closer to the British mark than, say, Austrian,Danish,German, Belgian, Italian or Spanish.(Thye all used Crowns of some sort.)

As suggested, can you get to the bottom of the barrel? There may be more marks there that would help.

Several of the European countrys used similiar brass capped, flat butted pistols similiar to that one. My guess would be French or Belgian, but who knows?

I would surf the online arms collectors sales houses, and compare the cool old pistol to the guns they're selling. Bet you find an identical one and description with a bit of effort.

Just a guess,,but I think the DN on the lock mark could be for 'Delft/Nederlandse'.

Delft being the city in Holland where one of two largest State run Armories were located. Maastrict being the other.
Nederlandse is Netherlands of course.

Again just a guess,,a very nice old pistol at any rate,,congrats!!

Again just a guess

But possibly a good one. The first thought into my mind was "Dutch Navy" before I realized they wouldn't be marking them in English.;)
Also could be the initials of some inspector.
