Stone cold mint. !950's vintage. 270 caliber.

Frank Pachmayr fitted swing out scope mount. Stock is AA plus grade.

How much does the scope mount hurt the gun? In my mind, I like it..... But how about collector value.?

any extra holes in gun will destroy collector value. is the stock orig. winchester or replaced? pics and i could say one way or the other probably.

Heavy Weight question.

Not one for the Lightweights... :D

Any Old Days gun guys left ?...

Fun is in conjuring up old memories of early writers, stories, ....you know. Iconic guns...

It depends on the mount. A 50's Model 70 should have one hole on the rear bridge and two on the front. If your Pachmayr is a bridge mount with no additional holes drilled, it doesn't hurt a thing. If it's a two piece or a side mount, it cuts the value from about $1600 in half.

Steve, You didn't say, but I am going to assume that this is not a Featherweight. Is the floor plate marked "Super Grade"?

The .270 is a fine round of course, but after the .30-'06, it's probably the most common chambering in Model 70's of this era. The butt plate should be checkered steel in a "Standard Grade" gun. Supers will often have have a red recoil pad with the Winchester Trade Mark molded into it as well a contrasting pistol grip cap and forend tip . Sling swivels are different as well. While the wood may be select and that would not be common for guns from this era, but unless the gun is a Super it doesn't mean the gun is of a different grade. Supergrade stocks will sometimes find their way onto Standard Grade guns..

The extra holes? Well.... in my view they do hurt the gun alot in the more common offerings... particularly in the side of the receiver where this sort of mount goes. Sometimes the holes end up in the
-WINCHESTER- stampings and this is very unsightly.... If you are buying the gun to shoot and use then it won't matter much. If you are buying the gun as an investment, then I would seek a cut rate price because of it. I'm thinking that a 50% reduction from the top end Blue Book value wouldn't be unreasonable.

In any event, Merry New Years to everyone at your house from ours....

Drew

I'd really like to see pics of the gun. Did Frank Pachmayr do the stock also?

Thanks Drew...

Best to you, and the generations of the Family....especially the young ones..

Thanks Steve. It sure has been a momentous year for our family. Two weddings and two new grandkids.

Best of luck with the Model 70.

Take care,

Drew

At some point the pre 64's got two holes in the top of the rear bridge.

Anyone know when?

I have collect and studied these model guns for 40 years, so I do have some knowledge. The rear bridge of the reciever was supplied with 2 tapped holes in @1948, after that all recievers had 4 top holes. I would sure like to see a photo of this gun. It sounds like it may have a custom stock. Winchester as well as other gun companies, in this era, were having a terrible time aquiring good wood. Winchester actually put out a bulliten to their customers apologizing for the poor quality wood.

Sounds right. I have a pristine 70 built in '49 that has four holes drilled. Definitely factory.

Does your gun have extra holes? Not sure why it would.

I was wrong about the single hole in the rear bridge; 30-30remchester is correct. I was thinking about one piece mounts that only used a single screw in the rear bridge and thought there was a period where Winchester only provided one hole there, but they didn't. I should have checked in Rule's book first, foot doesn't taste so good. :o

I also have a buggered up model 70. It`s a shame as it`s a first year .22 hornet. I didnt give much for it in the early 1970`s, took it out and found it was reemed to K-hornet. Also has holes for a sidemount. It`s still pretty and shoots good. Also have a about 1953 70 in 300 H&H.

Picked her up tonight. She is from 1951. I absolutely love that Pachymar Swing Mount. It will stay. Mounted a Leupold VXII with a 40 mm Bell. bolt just clears...

Now for the devastating news... restocked by Bishop ! :D

She is a beauty in my eyes, and I thank all of you for the advice/stories....
