Just a note to some of the new guys on the Forum............

While I would suspect that most of the Forum members are upstanding descent folks, this Forum can be viewed by anybody, including non members. I would therefore NOT list the complete serial number when requesting a date of manufacture, or other info. If you post photo's of a gun it is advisable to put a piece of tape over the last 2 or 3 digits.

When requesting a DOB or pertinent information, you can simply substitute XX for the last 2 digits. (example K376XX). Because of the world we live in today, this is JMHO of course..........

Why? Have been curious to why you shouldn't do this.

I am also curious what the issue would be with posting complete serial numbers. Heck, I don't even understand why people black out license plates on car/motorcyle photos. What can happen? Is someone going to replicate your serial number on their own gun?

Here's a reason. A person could report a gun stolen and use your SN. While it prolly wouldn't gain them anything it sure could cause you no end to problems even if you could easily prove the gun is yours. Ultimately, it may cause the reporter some problems. Why would someone do this? I don't know. I could never figure out why some folks do the things they do.

That really doesn't make sense, got something else for us..

It would be really difficult to report a gun stolen using an SN someone put on the net. Hard to make that one fly.

Here, report this one stolen, it's a M64.Hope you have a good lawyer.

For me, I simply don't want the whole world to know what the serial numbers are of all the guns I possess. That's my business and no one elses. Dozens of government agencies monitor this forum all the time.

Look at it this way, if there is a serial # involved, some lowlife out there can figure out a scam to run using it. Makes it even easier if you post a pic with the serial number exposed.

Eg: For Sale. Classic S&W Widget model CTG revolver, serial # 12345 (see pic). $500 or best offer.

"Honest Buyer" is interested and meets "seller" in parking lot convenient to both. Seller takes HB's money and runs. HB is now out money and no S&W so he calls police and btw officer here is the serial # and pic. The police are now interested in a gun you legally own.

Fast forward and for some reason your gun comes to the attention of law enforcement. Now, if you bought it from Joe's Pizza and Gun Shop, Joe should have the 4473 on file and it won't be real difficult to prove ownership. However, if you bought it from an Army buddy 20 years ago and either didn't get a receipt or you threw it away during spring cleaning last year because why should you keep it, you may have a LOT of trouble establishing ownership. So why risk a pain in the rear when you can pop a xx for the last two digits or tape over the serial if showing a pic.

Just my .02 worth. Your mileage may vary.

Nope, another stretch, just not gonna happen... unless someone is just really, really.... dumb

I'm not saying I think we should all expose our SN, just saying it shouldn't be a big deal, also, if one doesn't want to, I don't blame them, I'm not exposing my serial numbers for fun..... but I have no problem with them being seen, just not going out of my way.. I'm sure I have posted a picture or 2 here there and somewhere... with numbers showing. :)
