POSTING SERIAL NUMBERS

You actually have donuts left over? :D

He shouldn't have. The last of them were eaten by my scanner crew. Oops, what a giveaway....:D

This serial number thing can be more of a pain than some of you realise, especially in the milsurp world. It is not uncommon for similar guns to have identical serial numbers. For example, IIRC it is possible for three different types of Enfield to have the same serial. How many different contract Mausers have the serial A1234 I cannot image. If you have ever looked at what a dealer writes on a 4473 it can be less than helpful to resolve potential problems.

I also look at it this way. If somebody through genuine or malicious intent reports a gun you post as stolen, you are in for a lot of grief with your local law enforcement and/or the ATF. You also stand a good chance of having your collection seized while the matter is resolved in some jurisdictions. Once seized are they ALL coming back? No offense to the LEO community, but nice/unusual guns going AWOL from property storage is hardly unknown. Then you have to worry about the condition of your firearms when they are returned. Your pristine Garand is not going to look so cherry after a few weeks on the bottom of the crate with who knows what piled on top.

With all the scams going on these days (and there are brand new ones each & every day) it's just one less thing I have to concern myself with.

There is NO reason to list the last two digits when dating a gun or getting any technical information unless you are inquiring about a gun that there were only a few produced - that's an extremely rare case.

No need to attract attention to yourself if you are posting a rare gun or desirable gun - remember, ANYONE can view posts on this Forum. The true is I really see NO good reason at all to post the full serial # and I see more of a downside to doing so than the upside.

I may be a bit paranoid, but to survive and flourish in today's society, I think a small amount of paranoia is acceptable and prudent.

I haven't put anybody in jail in a long time. All my firearm purchases are documented. Use my gun serial numbers to say they are yours and see what happens, dummy.

Try posting a request to Roy with the last 2-3 digits of the serial number missing ! :) :)

Do what you must! - I personally see no purpose for posting a FULL serial #. If you are PMing Roy for a letter, that's different and NOT viewable to the general public.

Ain't no sense in taking any chances by posting the whole serial number in my thinking. I am just totally amazed at the stuff people can come up with to rip off a few bucks. Nothing surprises me anymore. If there is a way to use information of any kind for personal gain, without having to work for it, some buttcrack will figger it out. My Dad told me one time that if you can think of it, someone has probably already done it. Better safe than sorry as they say.

I have read the whole thread and listened to both sides and my opinion has stayed the same as it was the last time this topic was discussed except that I have now decided to fully agree with both viewpoints...
