POSTING SERIAL NUMBERS

Posting Serial Numbers

Lets face it. The real reason most people don't want to disclose the full serial number of a gun- even thought they came by the gun legally, is that the gun could be stolen property. Stolen guns don't always stay underground. They can surface and find there way into the legitimate gun market. If someone sees the serial number of a gun that was stolen from them (and can prove it),now we have a real problem as to who the legitimate owner is. I'm not a lawyer and it probably depends on where you live, but it's hard to claim you own something (even though you bought and paid for it) when it was stolen from someone else.

Probably true in some cases, but do you really want to own a stolen gun??
(And all of the complications that can come with it.)

Another good reason to keep track of who you got the gun from.

When I was stationed at Whidbey Island, I attended the gun shows at Puyallup, religiously. In three years, I bought a dozen antique Marlins. I never asked for a receipt and was lucky if the deal closed with a handshake. One night I asked my dispatcher if he could run some serial numbers for me. I had a fleeting thought, "What if my newly acquired 1893s are stolen?" My dispatcher told me that if any of my guns had been reported stolen, the Washington State Police would be calling our HQ, wondering why we ran the serials.

"Dozens of government agencies monitor this forum all the time."

Damn it !

Did you tell them I was here ?!?

GF

They can't find me - I got my tin foil hat on and put them on all my dogs...I'm thinking of painting a large mural of the farm and placing it in the driveway so they can't see the real building.

Nope, another stretch, just not gonna happen... unless someone is just really, really.... dumb

My point was there are scumbags out there who are constantly thinking up scams to run. After all, how many people have you heard about that rented a house only to find out their "landlord" didn't even own the house? I would guess most of us here on this site are honest people  but that doesn't mean some non-member lowlife isn't lurking here and the world is loaded with some really dumb people. ;) It still boils down to personal choice though. Some are comfortable posting or showing the serial # and some aren't.

Oh, I don't worry about that.... I always wrap my head in tinfoil before I cruise the web.

You mean I shoulda been usin' tinfoil instead of Press and Seal?

On a local gun web sight, a fellow gun owner received a visit from the ATF. The agent wanted confirmation that a gun he had posted for sale on that sight (with pic showing ser#) had been sold to the individual that had responded "I'll take it". No problem with the sale. The individual purchasing the gun had purchased several guns and resold them on various web sights. A reasonable amount of gun sales without a license is acceptable. The person had exceeded whats reasonable. (whatever that is) He also had not paid sales tax on his income from the sales.
I'm gonna speculate some states want their pound of flesh from anything you sell. If you provide a ser# so much the better for them.

I haven't listed complete numbers because I observed others did not. I assumed it must be illegal, immoral, fattening or some other excellent reason. Now I know different.

Wait a minute, that isn't what I think it is?

Well a while back I had this nice snubby from the Boston PD it had a inventory number on the side, 1676. I will never forget that number, wonder where it went...

The stocks even matched! :P

I will leave it to the experts...

Judging by the digression of this thread you will all soon be "wrapped" in your own personal straight jacket serial numbered to you. I hope the Koo Koo's nest has internet access.

alotta LEOs here...
what say you...
RETIRED, 32 YEARS LEO, PATROL, CRIMINAL INV., INV. WITH PROSECUTORS OFFICE. I WOULD NOT LIST THE COMPLETE NUMBER JUST AS I DON'T PUT MY DRIVERS LICENSE NUMBER OR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ON MY CHECKS. WHY GIVE ANYONE, HONEST OR NOT INFORMATION NOT NECESSARY TO THE DESCRIPTION OTHER THAN FIRST FEW INDICATING YEAR OF PRODUCTION. OF COURSE, THIS IS USUALLY STATED. ALWAYS ERR ON THE SIDE OF SAFETY. MY OPINION!!! IF YOU DON'T THINK BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING, READ ABOUT THE INTELLIGENCE CENTER BEING BUILT IN UTAH. SORRY I CAN'T REMEMBER THE SITE.
