Have you stocked up on light bulbs?

For those who might not be aware of it, the good old incandescent light bulb isn't going to be available much longer. Production is ending in phases, mandated by law, and pretty soon your choices will be limited to LEDs or CFLs. Production of 100 watt bulbs ended a year ago, 75 watt production ended this month, and next January will mark the end of the 60 watt bulb.

Most of the lamps in my home can't take anything but incandescent bulbs. Furthermore, I have a number of limited-edition lithographs which, like all such artwork, would be damaged by exposure to fluorescent light. Because of this, I started stocking up on incandescent bulbs more than a year ago, and I now have a stock sufficient to last me the rest of my life.

Just something to think about...

Yes, we bought a few cases of "normal" bulbs -- especially the 100, 250 and 500 watt bulbs.

Those curly things don't work when its cold out. At -5 they are basically worthless for illumination. They also don't put out the full spectrum of light which is why you can't read by them. The sympton is that a 60 watt CFL puts out only a fraction of the light that a 60 watt incandescent does.

Once the price of LED lamps comes down, they will be a realistic option but, those terrible CFLs use a ton more energy to manufacture than they will ever save, they are toxic and bad for the environment and, they don't put out any light.

Halogen lamps, by the way, use less energy per lumen than incandescents so if you have any fixtures that can use them, you'll get more light for your energy dollar too.

Ahhhh... The green police strike again with more stupidity. Nothing like tossing a bunch of mercury laden florescent bulbs into the country's landfills.

In addition, this whole 'Energy Star Compliant' ****-o, has made dishwasher's , clothes washers, and hot water heaters junk. The furnace dude looked at my old Kenmore 75 gallon hot water heater, and told me to 'take care of that', because the new ones sux.

For me it was a two year project, picking a few here, and a few more there.

I don't know how many we have, but it's a lot.....

I finally found a good use for old coolers, light bulb storage.

.

I am definitely a fan of the LED. I have one on my reloading bench. VERY nice quality of light, plenty of it, it's instant on and the "bulb" uses 9W of energy. Cost $20 at Home Depot well over a year ago. We are replacing the odd bulb here & there with the LEDs as we go.

FWIW they have gotten better with the CFL but I'm still not using them if I can help it. After we use up the crates of the useless things my wife got years ago that is.

You know, I've wondered why every time I go to Wally World
i don't see 100 watt bulbs...I didn't know that they had stopped
making them! I've got a few & I'm not looking forward to when I
use them up. Can't stand the curly Q fluorescent units;not enough
light & too expensive. Maybe when the LEDs are more available
I'll go that route.

I pickup a few during every visit to Lowes.

Ridiculous as it is, yes I have a good supply of 60, 75, and 100 watt bulbs.

I do the same with my handloading supplies. I pickup staple stuff any time I find a buy.

My thoughts...regular light bulbs are about junk..short-lived and juice-using. The only real advantage being they are cheap...and you can use them as mini-heat lamps according to wattage.

I actually like the mini flourescents...they last longer..put out reasonable light and less heat/energy use

My wife just bought a supply of 95 watt bulbs. Can't tell much difference from the old 100 watt bulb. Good way for a smart company to tell the Feds where to stick their 100 watters.

The mercury bulbs are going to be an unintended enviromental disaster. The dummies that came up with this idea assumed they would be disposed of properly. It ain't gonna happen.

Been workin' on it for over a year. Me gots plenty mucho incandescent light bulbs in 25s 40s and 60s I do need to stock up on the 75s and 3-ways. I despise they new kind. They don't fit any of my fixtures or floor lamps. I won't have one in the house until there are absolutely NO other kind.

They still have them in the free world - just not n the land of the free.

I have a million light bulbs in this house, ok maybe that's an exaggeration but there's a bunch of them and I sometimes feel like that's all I do is change bulbs since Mrs Comrad would sooner sit in the dark than change one. Anyway I discovered LED, yuup they are expensive but they will out last me and there is a very noticeable savings in the electric bill.
Instant on, good light color and not screaming hot like incandescent.

Ever heard of recycling?

Hazardous waste collection?

Maybe where you live, but not in the semi rural area I live in. Our nearest population center is all of maybe 4,000 people. The places that sell curly Q's don't have a hazardous waste collection point to return the things too. It's either the landfill or make a collection of burnt out curly Qs. Our taxpayer $$ at work.

Actually my wife was ready to commit me when I returned from Home Depot with $900 bucks worth of light bulbs! I have a large home and lots of light bulbs. I HATE the new Fluorescent and LED bulbs and understanding the light bulb Gestapo will soon see that we won't be able to buy them any longer, I did what I had to do.

Just did a similar job with Primers, Powders, and Bullet Heads.
