Suggestions? The best bourbon for one of the most important toasts of a man's life...
As difficult as it is for me to believe, my son recently turned 25. It is amazing how much he has seen and done in such a short time, including almost 6 years in USAF and 3 combat tours in Afghanistan (he just got back in September). Now he is taking another big step - next Saturday he is getting married to a wonderful young woman, the love of his life.
Anyway, his grandfather and I will have a little time alone with him before the wedding and I'd like to bring along something special to celebrate his accomplishments, his marriage, and life in general. We are a bourbon drinking family, Maker's Mark is the go to favorite for family gatherings and Wild Turkey Rare Breed comes out for birthdays. I know that there are some folks here that are also fond of bourbon so I'm looking for suggestions for something really special to mark the occassion. Help me out - what would be your choice for that once in a lifetime toast?
BTW, forget Pappy Van Winkle, can't find it anywhere.

We like Bulleit... It's been a part of many of our Family Toasts over the years, and you can find it here at home in Maine if you look around a little...
Please tell your Son how thankful we are for his service and wish him all the very best for his future.

Jack Daniels is a Tennessee Whiskey. Good stuff, but not a bourbon.

Congratulations! You have much to celebrate with a fine Son, a Dad their with with you to share the addition of a loving Daughter into your life.
It's the moment more than the choice of drink. Jim Beam suits my taste as well as any and better than most of the top shelf brands I've tried.
Again congrats to you, your Dad and Son!

Booker's, Knob Creek Single Barrel, Wild Turkey Rare Breed are the top three higher dollar Bourbons on my list.
Good all around Bourbon at a ridiculously good price, Evan Williams black label, Elijah Craig and Ezra Brooks. All are half the price of Wild Turkey 101 or Jim Beam Black Label and can hold their own neat. Make a good start for a Manhattan too!

Gasoline and Bourbon taste the same to me so I can't help on this one...but I wanted to say congrats to you for raising a great man, and to your son for serving his country, and for marrying the love of his life.
It sounds like you're going to have a great time.

Check out this link for some good bourbon reviews, you can get one as old as the birthday boy. I guess the real question is what's going to be available in your local stores.

Hard to find but worth the trouble. 11 to 13 years old and smooth as silk. This Tennessee boy thinks anything Jack Daniels makes is for the tourists.
OK so it's not bourbon, I dranks Maker's Mark till I ran into this stuff.

Black label Jim Beam is a very smooth and genteel drink for just such an occasion. Wish you and your son all the best!
Pete99004
Bookers is a Jim Beam product, by the way in case you didn't know.

Basil Hayden or Bulleit. But why not treat him to something special, Templeton Rye?

Marker Mark is a smooth bourbon, has a nice finish. But for me it's Knob Creek single barrel. Try Knob Creek Rye aged 9 nine years in white oak barrels like there bourbon.

You'll get as many opinions as you'll find people. Maybe more. Kind of like putting 10 economists in a room trying to come up with an answer to a problem and getting at least 11 answers, none of which are right.
Because you're in a time squeeze, I'd suggest you just find a few liquor stores, mixing big ones and small, out of the way ones. Then just spend the money and buy the most expensive one.
I have my favorites, and you won't find them in many stores. The best, and the one now regarded as the best bourbon ever produced is A H Hirsch. When I bought a case of it about 10 years ago, it was $54.95 a bottle. Now its selling, if you can find any, at about $650 a bottle. Its mostly been consumed or stuffed away by hoarders.
Yes, the Van Winkle is good but also unobtainable. I know of one bottle and he won't get off it. He doesn't even like bourbon.

I happen to have a few bottles of Pappy's 20 year reserve - I'm a bourbon man. But since that stuff is next to impossible to get, next choice - Woodford Reserve; it's an EXCELLENT bourbon. And I think you can find it in Maine.
(and congrats to you and your AF son too. Your son will always be proud of his AF days)

Forgive an old scotch fancier when I call all fine corn liquor bourbon whiskey. I forget that the folks in KY and TN are as sensitive about corn squeezing terms as Frenchmen are about wine terminology.

I sell the stuff for a living. My honest opinion on my favorite ever bourbon is Blantons. About 50-60 bucks. Comes in a very sharp cutglass bottle and smooth as silk. If you cant find the go for Buffalo Trace. BT gets some of the highest accolades in the country.

Pair it up with a gurkha grand reserve cigar. $15 each. Very nice cognac infused cigar. Or you could do the maker's Mark cigar. Same story but it's bourbon infused.

As Cdog has said,
It's the moment and accomplishments that are important.
Whatever you choose will be appreciated and remembered.
As Drew stated, Congratulate him and Thank him for his

WC, You got me thinking about this as I have a toast or two in mind for my new grandson, Ethan.
I walked through the liquor section at Hannford's and saw that not only did they have it, but they were running a promotion on Bulleit for $25 a bottle!

I see there are a number of Bourbon aficionado's in The Lounge!
Forgot about Blanton's and it is good bourbon.
But I got put another plug in for Willetts Pot Still Reserve:
Found this back in May, on vacation, only bought one bottle (fool). I'm on the hunt for a local supplier.

Did you know that the horse's legs on the corks are in different positions on each bottle? Supposedly if you can afford the whole series of bottles they show the horse in a full stride.
Sounds like horse hocky to sell more to me, but a little Blanton factoid none the less.

Depends on your budget. Distillers Masterpiece from Jim Beam if you don't mind spending $200. My wife got me a bottle for my birthday a few years ago. It was very good!

I have heard that if you collect them all, Blantons will mount them for you.

Not a bourbon I know but I would encourage any whisky drinker to try some George Dickel Tennessee #12 sour mash sippin' whisky. My opinion is it leaves JD and most others in the dust. This sour mash is made to drink straight or neat however you want to say it. In my opinion the aroma and taste of George Dickel 90 proof #12 is second to none and you ruin the experience of drinking this fine whisky by cutting it with anything except maybe a little water by when you are finished. If you have notions of slamming this down out of a shot glass they'll be picking you up off the floor after about the 3rd one. This whisky isn't for getting hammered it is to savor and enjoy. Been made here in Tullahoma Tn since 1870. Give it a try sometime fellas!
