This morning I got an e-mail that was allegedly from Verizon, advising that my credit card had been declined for my most recent account charges. The email provided a link where I could update my credit card information.

I have my Verizon bill paid automatically from my checking account, and the billing cycle runs until the 20th of each month. My last bill has already been paid, and the next one won't be paid for three weeks. Suspicious of this e-mail, I called Verizon and learned that this is a fraudulent 'phishing' attempt, and it's been circulating for a few months now.

It's really sickening to realize how many dishonest slugs there are in this world. Please be careful about responding to anything like this.

I never utilize links provided in email even from institutions known to me. I just go to website via my bookmark or directly type an address. Links in email are way too easy to forge.

The credit card scams go on and on. A few years ago my credit card info was stolen.
I get a call from a guy who says he is from the security dept of my credit card co. The next words out of his mouth are crucial. My words were OK.
He says we suspect fraudulate usage of your card. I say go ahead.
Then he asks me if I rented a car in Ireland. No.
Did you buy train tickets in Italy ? No.
You card is cancelled, chop it up. I say I did buy gas and pay for a motel room at Pagosa Springs. One of those locales used my info.
Notice he never asked me for personal or card info. If they do that just hang up.

I have two credit cards, and both issuers are very vigilant about security. If I buy something that is expensive or unusual, they will deny the purchase and tell the merchant to have me contact them to authorize it.

A couple of years ago, a buddy of mine here in Maryland, who is also a firefighter and who prides himself on being the world's cheapest man, got a call from his credit card company. They wanted to know if he was, at that moment, trying to buy a Rolex at a jeweler in Miami...

We both still chuckle at that one! :)
