Yeah Something tells me the strict gun control ain't workin!!! City has been a zoo for many years. Can't imagine living in a worse place except maybe NYC.

I grew up in Indiana south of Chicago and listened to WLS radio in the summer in 1970 the radio would report 5 or 6 shootings per Friday and Saturday. Who would have thought those were the Good old Days. My Dad always said he would rather not live at all as live there.

The acronym that comes to mind is "RICO". Don't know if there's the money, personnel or will to apply it; but something has to found to at least weaken the gangs' command structure.

I'm just afraid that Chicago is one of the cities where the gangs are too entrenched and the gang culture too pervasive for much success in trying to control them.

The father of the little boy who was killed apparently was the real target. He had been arrested many times, and was walking free. He should have been in prison for a very long time. But when the gangs threaten the lives and families of witnesses if they testify against these vicious criminals, building a case can be nearly impossible.

Yes, the system is broken. But how to fix it?

EDITED TO ADD: More gun control damn sure isn't the answer.

Sounds like you haven't actually been there. Chicago is an amazing city with much to offer. Neither my wife nor I ever had any issues living downtown. We would often walk the dogs very late, and didn't live in fear.

Cook County Illinois (Chicago) had 45 people shot over the 4th weekend, how's that gun control working in Chicago?

While not a proponent of the strict gun laws in Cook County, it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to understand that guns are mobile. They are easily transferred from a locale with lax laws to one with more draconian statutes, usually for profit. Unless the entire country adopts the stricter laws, they are comically easy to circumvent.

Must have been stray bullets from Indiana.

That's more true than you know; CPD has stated that many of the seized guns are traceable to Indiana straw purchases.

The gangs are deeply embedded in Chicago, and unless this is addressed, we won't make any true headway with the problem.

We shouldn't, however, humor the media's inaccurate and fear-bating portrayal of what is a magnificent city.

Follow the money, there must be a reason all this shooting occurs. Now I understand Bubba must of had an arguement with Bobby that erupted into a shooting. However, if someone looked deeper into the lives of the victims there has got to be something bigger going on.

Gun laws are only followed by law abiding citizens, these yahoo's don't care.

Chicago is bad enough in a normal week and on a holiday 3 day weekend seems everything explodes .. Add fireworks cookouts and booze to the mix and .. well sadly we see what happens!

Had to go up there for some medical treatment 1 to 2 times a week awhile back and hated it ..

Boys father had been arrested over 40 times .. if he would have been in jail his son would still be alive today. He was a high ranking gang member. Another gang tried to assassinate him ..

Not bashing Chicago, I’ve been there a number of times and always enjoyed myself. I always felt as safe there as I did in any large city. Most of the time I was in the areas of Lincoln Park, lakeshore Dr. and Wrigley Field.

But the culture of corruption, graft, gang activity (of all types), a wink and a nod handshakes, and violence has been a part of the city’s history for so long, I’m not sure Chicago’s problems can or ever will be solved. Nor do I believe that some of the powers to be want the problems totally solved.

Just like how cocaine and heroin are illegal in all states, and now we can't get any and you never seen any on the streets? Oh, wait....

There are more guns in Wyoming than Chicago. Yet no slew of shootings here. Maybe it is something other than guns at work.

You have to understand what is really happening in Chicago. Carloads of NRA members (most of them Life) are coming in from the suburbs, having bought many weapons and large quantities of ammunition at the gun shows in DuPage, Will, Kane, and Lake counties. They are cruising the streets of Chicago, handing out their vile guns to innocent young children, encouraging them to set out on a life of crime and violence. The evildoers are especially targeting youngsters on the way home from Bible Study, choir practice, and the library.

When oh when will this evil stop! When can we finally call a halt to this insane trafficking in weapons of destruction!

With the exception of the 7 year old who got shot and killed-the rest of the shootings are what are euphemistically referred to as "Misdemeanor shootings" The 7 year old is what is referred to as collateral damage and his death is going to cause a lot more misdemeanor shootings to even the score. One good thing is that the little boy is in a much better place.

I was born in Chicago, now live within 90 miles of the city, my daughter currently lives there, and I have business in the city at least once per month. It's sad to read about the shootings but the real problem is gangs. The CPD annually published a homicide report that described perps, victims, weapons, and motivation. About 80% of both victims and perps had prior arrests and were between 18-34 years of age. At least 1/3 of the homicides were directly attributed to gang/drug disputes. Another 1/3 were classed as unknown motivation. 1/3 made up all other motivations including domestic disputes and robberies. This info is from the last year the report was published, 2011. Apparently McCarthy and Rahm stopped Internet publication of the report after 2011- I suspect because it highlighted the gang problem.

Of the 500 homicides that year a rifle was used in only one.

Straw purchases are blamed. If that occurs they should go after the straw purchasers. The phase that gets me is McCarthy spouting off about taking illegal guns off the street. In most of the photos, you can tell the guns aren't illegal, it's the ownership that was illegal
