Hi everybody,

Are there currently any firearm manufacturers who offer private factory tours?

I'm planning a visit to NY. From the top of my head I can think of Remington and Ithaca located in that state. Does anybody know if they offer factory tours?

I would definitely catch a bus/train/flight to Springfield, Mass. if S&W did, but as far as I understand, S&W does not longer offer factory tours. :(

Anyway, any input is much appreciated, thank you in advance! :)

I hope that someone more knowledgeable jumps in but to the best of my knowledge their is no factory tour any more at Remington..

Your coming a long way I hope that you have a good trip!:)

Remington stopped giving mfg'r facility tours in about 2014.
There's a small museum and trinket shop but hardly worth the drive.

Ithaca closed that factory in the late 80's and moved to Kings Ferry, NY. (then later to Sandusky Oh as Ithaca Guns USA)
The Ithaca NY factory is now only the shell of a couple buildings remaining,,if that. The city in a battle betw politicians, developers and the EPA over the land and continuing toxic chemical & lead contamination issues. especially by the falls.
Not much love in Ithaca for the grand old Gun Mfg'r from the current crowd of liberal Cornell Univ inhabitants.

Nothing in Utica that I know of to note the prior existance of Savage Arms in that city for many years. No museum or otherwise.
Same thing for Syracuse re: LC Smith and Lefever Arms Co.

Nothing to see here,,move along...

While it's no longer a functioning weapons factory, the Armory at Springfield Armory National Historic Site was "The" weapons factory for a new United States, and was commissioned by George Washington as an arsenal, and only ceased production in 1968.

The museum is excellent, and most of the original buildings of the factory still exist throughout the city, though about half are in private hands. The museum is on the grounds of a public college, and many of the college buildings are reused armory structures and maintain much of their character. They used to be easily accessed for informal exploration.

If you explore some of the former armory buildings on the college campus, Building 19 is unique. It is the only standing structure in this country that can be called a Caserne, a French term for a combination military barracks for cavalry officers living above cavalry horse stables, although it was never actually used for that purpose.
It’s not a replica, it’s the U.S. Army’s version of what this might look like in the United States.

One of the forum members just posted pictures from a new Springfield museum, two blocks from the armory, with a beautiful collection of Smith & Wesson's.

It's been decades, but train (Amtrak) travel used to be easy from NYC to Springfield, with the station, armory, and hotels only a few blocks apart.

Good luck. :)

Actually it's UPPER Sandusky, which is approx. 50 miles south of Sandusky (on Lake Erie) It is called that because rivers flow north at that point in Ohio and there lie the "upper" reaches of the Sandusky river. I've toured that factory.

New York is a big state . . .

The West Point Museum has some great exhibits.

Today is my birthday . Myself and two of my buddy's are going up to the Springfield museum to see the Smith &Wesson collection and the Indian motorcycle collection.
After that if we have time we will go to the Springfield Armory.
I've seen the Armory a few time's but my buddy's have not.

Thank you sir, I very much enjoyed visiting the US a few years ago and very much look forward to do it again. :)

It's a shame Remington does not offer the tours anymore. :(

You are most definitely right, sir... I completely forgot that Ithaca had moved to OH in the last of its many change of hands. Must be quite sad to see those abandoned Ithaca buildings, such an important company in firearms history.

Your welcome. :)

If you'll be here during the last two weeks of September, be aware that the New England State Fair (The Big "E") takes place in West Springfield during that time, and hotels will be booked solid. It's a fun fair, if you choose to include that as a side trip.

The Big E

Also, the tree leaves turn beautiful colors there at that time of year in New England, and that brings visitors to the region as well.

If your hungry in Manhattan, my brother Nick has a restaurant 2 blocks west of the Theater District and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Nice friendly atmosphere and good food.

Thank you for the tips! We're going next April and I'll be staying in NYC indeed. The restaurant looks great!! :)

About ranges or shooting activities... outta luck, right? I reckon NY is a non-gun friendly state and, if I'm not mistaken, non-residents cannot make use of ranges. Am I right?

Thank you all! :)

Any range I have been on nons can shoot, that might only be for rifles and shotguns. Our pistol rules are totally crazy and thats just for residents with pistol permits!.

Dear NYLakesider,

Are there any ranges in the Manhattan / NYC area? (I don't imagine there must be a lot, being such an anti-gun State).

There's still many months since I'll be going there but I'm extremely interested in being able to participate in some shooting / gun rental activity.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry I cannot help you, I live in Northern NY which is about 250 miles North of the city and rarely go there.

Good Luck, perhaps someone reading this from the downstate area will know!

Thank you very much!

Unfortunately...
In the City of New York one does not need a permit to shoot a .22 Caliber Rifle. At Westiside we offer the opportunity for novices to experience the excitement of firing a .22 caliber rifle.

In NYC and the five boroughs, a civilian cannot shoot/use/rent a HANDGUN or PISTOL without having a NYC Handgun License issued by NYPD License Division.

Bummer.
I don't think I'll be experiencing the excitement of firing a .22 for $75. :p

If you ever get down to Greenville SC, my range regularly rents to foreign visitors.
A non-member pays $15 for a full day's use of one of the 16, 25 yard indoor lanes. If we're in town, I'd be happy to take you for free as my guest, just IM me.

Firearms & Personal Protective Equipment Rentals:
Handguns (Pistols & Revolvers): $10.00 for 1st, $5.00 for each additional rental
Long-guns (Rifles & Shot-guns): $10.00 for 1st, $5.00 for each additional rental
Full-Auto Rifles: $20.00 ea.

Ammo for rentals must be purchased from the range.

Good luck.

There's a range in NJ near lower Manhattan that offers all kinds of rentals. Offhand I don't remember the name but I'll have it by the weekend.
