We are going to be moving to a different part of the country. I need to protect all my hand guns REALLY well against any damage. I'm thinking of wrapping each of them in several layers of bubble wrap ( after giving them a good oil rubdown). Probably for a few weeks. Has anyone heard of any damage than can be caused by contact with bubble wrap ?? I've read it is a benign product, but would like some input. Thank you in advance for your advice and/or comments:)

I too would suggest putting each in a gun sock, then wrap as needed. I've been told oils can interact (in a bad way) with foam in gun cases, not sure about the plastics used in bubble wrap. But esp with them potentially being wrapped up for a few weeks and depending on where they are to be stored (and in what conditions), I'd probably have something between the gun and the wrap.

To clarify my post; I will be placing each gun in a cotton sock, and then wrapping in several layers of bubble wrap. Thanks for you responses. Sounds like I'll be OK this route, then packed in a separate padded box. :)

I agree with Ranger17. Firearms are shipped in bubble wrap all the time, but you're indicating that they may be packaged that way for several weeks... Get some cheap gun socks from MidawayUSA, and put them between the gun and the wrap. Midway has had the common sizes on clearance for $4 each recently.

Another vote for using the gun socks first and then wrapping them in the bubble wrap. I believe that you can get the gun socks impregnated with silicone which should ward against moisture while being wrapped up for a time. IMO it's a minor investment to protect your guns.

You will want to use a gun sock or wrapping tissue before wrapping in bubble wrap. The chemicals used in the bubble wrap plastic to keep it soft and flexible can wreak havoc on some finishes, leaving a bubble wrap impression that never goes away.

I once bought a high standard with a lot of wear from a private seller. There was a hangup at the PO for my ffl. The barrel of the gun was exterior to the package. It was wrapped in bubble wrap. Based on that I cannot recommend that it will stay where it's put. Go with a hard case.

Considering how long they'll be wrapped up you might want to consider getting some dessicant packs, too.

Blued guns in contact with any "Plastic" or "Foam Rubber" for any extended time (a week or more) will show evidence of that contact, and it won't be good. If you use bubble wrap, wrap the gun completely in clean soft cloth before the bubble wrap, and I would wipe down good with "Rig" first. Don't leave stored this way any longer than necessary.

I make my own gunrugs with microfiber towels and velcro tape. Finish up with bubble wrap and I wouldn't worry.

Haven't heard of any damage, but if I were packing them I'd oil them well, wrap in a microfiber cloth or at least an old sock or something before wrapping in bubble wrap. If any solvents dissolved the plastic onto a gun you'd have a heck of a mess.

You can buy the nox-rust paper on Ebay very cheap. Wrap in that then bubble wrap.

If your moving them yourself, I would not think you need to buy expensive hard cases/boxes. You will be 1000 times more careful than the gorilla's at the post office .

Sir, the only other thing I would do, is give each sock a good squirt of spray silicon. If you have them drop a silica pack or two into each sock.

Best of luck with the move...

If it were me, I'd FIRST get a roll of VOC paper (the type S&W uses with their packaging) or a least a roll of heavy duty waxed paper from the Supermarket and wipe all guns down with some light rust preventative Oil.
THEN, if you want to wrap them in Bubble Wrap - go right ahead for extra protection, but I would not put Bubble Wrap directly on the guns.

Will you be transporting or a moving company? Depending on the atmosphere (temp, humidity), I think a good lube with some type anti-corrosive protectant, wrapped in suitable material (cloth or paper) and packed in foam peanuts, bubble wrap, etc. would provide adequate protection for a few weeks.
ETA:
Dunno how much $$$ it is, but I've used something along these lines before on machines, tools, equipment to prevent corrosion.

Can't comment on how it might react with wooden stocks. Doubt it would hurt them but may be more trouble than its worth???
