Kidde Recalls Fire Extinguishers with Plastic Handles Due to Failure to Discharge and Nozzle Detachment: One Death Reported | CPSC.gov

N130284 US Landing Page . Inmar Recall

Just to add to your excellent post!

There are many millions in this recall, do not put off starting the ball roiling. I emailed in and got on the list at 4.o'clock yesterday (Nov 2)

We have a couple bigger bottles one upstairs by the pellet stove and one down in the garage!

Both of the extinguishers I have are First Alert brand. The one that is three years old states by Jarden. Which I believe is Newell Rubbermaid or Newell Brands these days. That said...

Having once pulled the pin on a kitchen type fire extinguisher (a Kidde as I recall) when it was truly needed and having the device work perfectly and put out a grease fire, I think this recall is a reminder to me to replace that old kitchen extinguisher I have that dates from the 20th Century.

It would simply be horrible have to resort to a fire extinguisher and have it fail.

This reminds me of a discussion with a former co-worker...he was against gun ownership, saying what if I couldn't get to my defense weapon at home, what good was it?...I asked, do you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen...he said "yes", and I asked him what would happen if he couldn't get to it due to the fire...he stated he had several in the house...i said, "So do I". And I wasn't talking about extinguishers. Shut his yap.

Thanks for the heads-up. I found five fire extinguishers laying about. three of them were covered by the recall. Filled out the online form and now I'm good to go.

Edit: Darn - I just found another one under the kitchen sink. Now I have four replacements on the way.

From experience in a previous career, I only use Ansul brand fire extinguishers. Like most any other quality tool, they cost a little more.

I called Kidde today, they're sending me three to replace the ones I have that are on recall.

I'm three out four, for recall.

BTW, on the online form--if you don't see any
"date code" printed on lower part of bottle,
just leave that box blank. I had a couple of
2007 extinguishers (supposed to have date
code, but none showing on mine) and it
accepted the empty box entry.

Thanks for the notice. I have two in the recall and one more to check on in a remote vehicle. After working in American Red Cross Disaster Services, I have fire extinguishers around the house and garage.

If any of you get a new one from Kidde, practice with your old one in the yard. You'll be surprised how fast a 2.5 pound extinguisher is used up. Don't spray a dry chemical extinguisher on anything that you can't wash with a garden hose and dish soap.

Thanks, Rule3, for the very important PSA.
I have five Kidde extinguishers, and two of them were included in the recall. I've already submitted my info on their website, so I'm looking forward to getting two new extinguishers soon.

I just used one of these to put out a fuel fire at the track two weeks ago.(not my car..:) ) Luckily,it worked.Scary stuff. Now I wish I had kept the empty and got a free replacement. I have three others that are under the recall. I replaced the 2.5lb unit with a 5lb unit. Bigger is better...

Well,, BOO HISS on KIDDE!!

My recalled fire extinguisher is a Kidde 10-B-C,,, they sent a Kidde 5-B-C

The new extinguisher is half the size of the old one, and weighs a pound less (about 1/3)

After 4 calls, I have been on hold for 15 minutes (thank goodness for speaker phones, and volume control)

I assume the one sent is 1/2 the capacity of the old one?

They sent a note that I should put the old one in the same packaging, and return,,,
that is a JOKE, it should be a similar extinguisher, not half the size,,,
My old extinguisher will not fit in the little box they sent,,

I have been on hold long enough to get a pic,,,

I called Kidde a few weeks ago, they said it would be about 30 days for the replacement to be sent. I asked what to do with the old extinguisher, and the person I spoke with (sounded like a lady of advanced age) said she had no idea. I assume the return box will have prepaid postage/UPS/whatever. If not, I won't bother sending it back.

Mine came last Saturday after only 9 days. It come with a paid for FEDX addressed label.. Just put the old FILLED extinguisher in the box, tape box and send it back. Sent it back last Wednesday!

So simple even a cave man could do it!

Had one on the list. It was 21 years old. Rather than send it back, or even call, I decided to use it to show my wife how to put out a fire with one. Some charcoal lighter in an foil baking pan and off to the fire we went. It worked well.

And yes, I did replace it. With a bigger one.
