While I have great respect for Sergio Leone and his body of work...I also have to admit that a significant part of what made his films great was the contributions by Ennio Morricone.

That’s a nice version of “Ecstasy of Gold”. I play that most every morning, pre dawn with my first coffee in the garden. There’s a group of joggers that come by about that time daily. One morning I hadn’t turned on the stereo, and one of them called over the fence “Hey Cap,where’s our music?!”

Absolutely. On some of Leone’s early films, like “A Fistful of Dollars”, a somewhat clumsy Kurosawa adaptation, the writing and directing as a whole wasn’t that great, but Morricone’s music already set them apart. And his masterpieces reached their peak with those epic gunfights combining Leone’s technique of face close-ups and Morricone’s music.
This Danish live performance is a cool reminder how many odd sound effects make up Morricone’s unique style. Nowadays they just produce them digitally, but back in the 1960s all those flutes, gongs, and clapping boards had to be live-recorded.

Why does Lee Van Cleef wear a gunbelt with cartridges when he has a Remington C&B revolver? And Eli Wallach's Colt 1851 Navy has no caps on the nipples. I would think he would have noticed that before he went into a shootout. One of the greatest lines ever - those with loaded guns and those who dig.

I'd have to rewatch it DWalt ...but AFAIK the film takes place just after the Civil War...so maybe those are conversion revolvers? Spaghetti Westerns don't always get the guns right. IIRC "The Grand Duel" features an ambush of a wagon train by a guy using an MG42.
Here's proof the film has some anachronisms Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The - Internet Movie Firearms Database - Guns in Movies, TV and Video Games

Music and song--THE only universal language.
American made Western-filmed in Rome-Spain,,staring people form all over the world,,,reaching around the Globe, and still so many years later inspire people to come together and celebrate this most wonderful movie and music.
Thank you,

Ever better line from the same movie: When you have to shoot, shoot, don’t talk. Eli Wallach raises a supposedly black-powder Colt out of a bathtub for that one ... good luck getting that to fire in real life

Actually it is quite possible. Back in the day it was not uncommon to fill
with tallow the area of the caps and there was also tallow over the balls. That would make them somewhat waterproof.
I know of a case where a Colt pocket model was found hidden in a old house(where it should have been for ages) and it was so treated. The finders (owners of the old family house) tried it, and it fired all 5 rounds.

I'm a fan of Morricone's work. Here is another side of it, conducted by the maestro himself.
This one has an emotional tug for me. My late brother turned me onto the clip, a year or so before he died.
Morricone: Gabriel's Oboe (The Mission) and Main Theme from Cinema Paradiso - YouTube
I'm not the least bit embarrassed to admit to you folks that just now I played the clip again to see if it had posted properly,
and suddenly dissolved in tears. My brother has been dead for four years, and it's been a long time since I cried for his passing. But such is the power of beautiful music. Grazie, Maestro.

The instruments in the Brit version were purchased second hand by the musicians at garage sales, second hand shops, and their version of pawn shops. Their original arrangement was done as a gag, and well done it was. One of my favorite arrangements.

I've been watching The Men From Shiloh. Ennio Morricone wrote the music for the intro:

I have Ennio Morricone's original score for the movie in the Soundtracks folder of my MP3's, along with For a Few Dollars More. I remember listening to those soundtracks on Dad's nice console record player in the back bedroom when I was a kid. I wish I still had that old console. I would gut it and rebuild with modern speakers and components.

Love old movie sound tracks. War of 1812 overture with real bells and cannon was one of my favorites. Setting back into my youth (71 now) and occasionally finding myself buying older movies on disk. Gettysburg with Jeff Daniels, and Last of the Mohicans have great sound tracks. Frank

It's funny looking back my mom thought the dollars movies were just way too violent at the time lol.I remember her talking about too much gun fighting hanging killing and not to mention some of those actresses might as well have been ( she would whisper this ) naked.Dad would just smile and yea you are right dear look at me and wink .I was getting ready to turn 16 and start driving ,dating ect he had given me the first part of " the talk" but as the big day approached he gave me the second part and slipped me something made of a stretchy material to protect myself and it wasn't a slingshot and said " son do you love your mom "? I of cours said yes sir . He said well don't let her find these but if she does you either bought em stole em or whatever but you did not get them from me then he told me some great hiding places and I was in the process of reassuring him that I was a " good boy ect ect " He said yea good boy but you have heard of the sex drugs and rock and roll generation right .I said yes sir he said well my generation trained them so don't bull jive me .He would have loved hanging out with you guys watching these old classics and listening to music talking cars guns women ect .And that's as high a compliment I can give you fellas .Thanks for posting great movies great music and great memories .

Ennio Morricone loved to use the human voice as an instrument.
Another great example is the theme from Once Upon a Time in the West.

I've never before seen how all those various sounds were made, I've wondered, every time I saw the movie or clips from it, but never bothered to look into it.
That was great! Thanks very much!

If you look closely, behind the Danish Orchestra, on the wall, is an enormous stylised logo of The Man With No Name.

I think the idea was that Tuco had the revolver dangling from that lanyard seen around his neck so that it was hidden by all the bubbles but held above the water line in the tub. Anyways, that's my take on the story ...

They carry cartridge conversions during the Civil War. An anachronism.
But the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was somewhat whimsical, so all is forgiven.

Oh yeah, the movie is definitely set in the Civil War but the revolvers all fire metallic cartridges. Historically-accuracy-wise, I would hold this movie to a fairly low standard, being made in Spain by Italians.

You'd be surprized.
Considering what Hollyweird has been doing to American History (and History in general) I would leave the Eyetalians alone.

A scene that made me laugh was the river bridge. On the far side was a big gun, like a 10" Dalgren. A navy gun. No army would be lugging one around.

Think Parrot instead of Dahlgren. Army will drag around whatever seems necessary.

BTW, That Danish crew does the theme from "A Few Dollars More" even better, IMHO.

Only the greatest movie of all time. There seems to be an awful lot of hate in media movie reviews, yet many people depend on these flicks for their livelihood. Just check out the credit rolls at the end of any movie.

Look at the gun on the hill above at 1:21.
Navy gun. Not army gun. Army not dragging that around.

Heavy artilley wasn't dragged around much that's true. But it was moved to where it was needed. Railroads had a big part in the war.

Morriconi is a GENIUS.......
That 'theme' and the accompanying music in the movie are a like a symphony that ends with one of the greatest gunfight scenes ever with the music adding tons to the timing and the the camera work.
He has tons of other work, too.
One criticism. The guitar needed to be louder and a little more distorted. A nickname for that kind of music is "Big Guitar". The oboe came through well.
An orchestra selecting a movie theme from the mid 1960s says something. This has to be in the list of the greatest movie themes ever.
In the movie the 'Ahahahah' singers sound like men and sound a little more wild.

These scenes have a hint of choreographing in them. I noticed this in both Good Bad And the Ugly...as well as the final duel in Once Upon A Time In The West. The way they walk across the "stage" and position themsleves. It is a dance of sorts...a lot like a ballet. That's old school European filmmaking. Dino De Laurentis used the technique to great effect in the closing scene of Conan The Barbarian. Many times I wish modern filmmakers would ditch the CGI and low-budget techniques and return to the old ways of filmmaking.
