Removing Unwanted Geese From Your Yard

There is only one species of geese are protected, the Emperor Goose. The rest are managed. Hunting is fully legal at certain times of the year anywhere you can legally shoot a gun. The USFWS manages the population and monitors all waterfowl, working closely with Canada and Latin America to establish hunting limits depending on population status. Canada Goose hunting in the US has allowed limits of 3 to 6 Canada (dark) geese per day depending on where you live.

Snow (light) geese limits are much larger, due to their very high population in recent decades. Too many of these geese in northern Canada has resulted in almost all available food eaten by millions of these species, devasting many perm-frost areas. Fortunately, they have never become accustomed to human environments and are not much of a problem for most except the winter grain farmers of the central and western US. Limits are very high, and some states offer a limitless daily harvest and possession. With even these extreme measures, the population is still not under control. Light goose populations in North America are estimated at over 15 million birds. Canada goose populations, on the other hand, are estimated at 5 million birds.

Bottom line is that while you might find some lenient Conservation Officers out there, but it is the Feds you need to be concerned about. The laws are simple, direct, and all encompassing, plus vigorously enforced by Federal agents. States are required to follow the Federal laws and work within their parameters in establishing each year's hunting seasons, regulations, and enforcement.

The local Police have no say so in what you can shoot . Damn near everything with feathers is Federally protected .

Ever tried to launch a boat trailer down (or up) a concrete launch ramp that geese have been resting on?

(The old saying "slicker than goose s___" is based on experience...)

My town spent mega bucks updating our launch ramp. The geese must like the plastic floating docks because THAT is where they defecate.

Once upon a time the Vol. Fire company would send a truck down every few days and blast off the docks. They don't do that any more. Our town Mayor is a boater and I personally complained and moaned to him about me having to buy a $$$ launch ramp season pass when I can't use the ramp.

They found some kind of chemical and they spray the docks. No more geese. Obviously, there IS something out there, you just need to find what it is.

Local golf courses have used coyote (or maybe German Shepherd) silhouettes to scare off the geese. Sort of a reverse decoy. Seems to work. Not as fun as some alternatives.

Our high school uses an eagle silhouette to keep them off the football field.

Harassing geese? Maybe that'd be an issue in some states, here we have a daily bag limit of 15 with a possession limit of 45. Even the Game & Fish folks realize they are little more than pests.

We can take 5 per day with a possession limit of 15. I was working near the Columbia most of today and heard gunfire the entire time. I knew it was bird hunters, and hopefully, helping with our problem.

My thanks to everyone for the replies! And to those concerned about me getting a visit from the authorities, I'm just not too worried about it. I think any fed looking at this forum for law-breakers is actually looking for bigger fish to fry than someone harassing nuisance geese! Plus, I haven't had to scare them off for a while. I think they might have gotten the message. I just wanted those with this same problem to know how effective the solution I discovered is.

When my daughter was very little, she talked me into buying four cute little African Goose chicks. They really were cute, for about three weeks. In about three months they evolved into big feathered devils that had no fear of anything, and only wanted to kill anything they saw. Vicious is a compliment, and they do "goose" you if you turn your back on them.

I have my mom's old Red Ryder (which is 74 years old now), and bounced a BB off the side of one of them, and he didn't even look around, he was completely un-fazed.

The seals and springs in the BB gun are probably totally worn out. The BB is probably moving just fast enough to remain airborne but not fast enough to be noticed by the geese. Get your self a pump-up pellet rifle so you can determine how fast the pellet is traveling.

These are Federally and Internationally protected wildlife that you are harassing! You are in violation of around 7 laws, not counting your state laws!

Those geese have more rights than you do! And you just posted for all the world to see.

Rule One, The Three Nothings: Hear Nothing, Say Nothing, See Nothing.

Rule Two, Get somebody Else: Complain to the complex management, and let them hire licensed professionals to deal with these pests.

Rule Three, Italian: I use Italian salad dressing as a marinade for several hours on the breasts before grilling. (I limit out during non-migratory season!)
