About any chair I sit on any more is literally a pain in the butt. My big brother just got a Steelcase chair and his first impressions are that it is the best chair he has ever sat in. At $700 it should be good. I have seriously looked at their offerings, along with the X-chair, which also gets some good reviews. Has anyone here had any long term experience with a really good chair that does not get to be a pain in the butt after a half hour or so ? As an aside, I am pretty darn active during the day but from 6 o'clock on in the evening I pretty much keep off my feet. I am 75 and plan on using the chair at the dinner table and at the computer. I have a wonderful overstuffed chair in the big room I fall asleep in every night.

Hubby is very large and wanted a good chair that would survive his use. He's broken chairs before.
Before he retired, about 25 years ago, he bought 2 Steelcase chairs, one for work and one for his home office. They were in the price range you mentioned. He is now retired, but still uses it comfortably at home and it's held up like new.
My father-in-law bought one after trying hubby's, but got a version without as good padding, and it was noticably less comfortable. So if they still come with padding options, go for the max.

That reminds me. Hubby tried out the H. Miller chair and liked it, but discovered it's max weight rating wasn't high enough for him. The Steelcase was the only brand rated for his weight.

I visited with Telortactical.com / Telorproducts.com in Ringgold, GA recently and saw them making their Breezy Seat, along with IWB, pocket holsters, and much more. I recommend trying their Breezy Seat first. If you use my high school youth shooting team's code of RIDGELAND21 you'll get 10% off as well as be supporting our team.

This thread brought a recent situation involving EXPENSIVE chairs to mind.

the seven chairs in question are approximately $2,500 each

For a number of years I've had & used daily a chair by an outfit called SitOnIt out of California. I'm more than satisfied. It supports the back real well, wasn't overly expensive, and has held up. Look it up and see what you think.

Best wishes in your search,
Andy

Reading that Marshall County discussion, linked above, on the chairs, reminds me of how very grateful I am to be retired...

I went to an estate sale in our subdivision about four years ago. It was one street over, just behind our house. They had three identical office chairs and two of them still had the instruction packets cable tied to the frame. My office chair was junk and these seemed pretty nice, so I bought one for $75 and brought it home. I had never heard of Humanscale before, so I looked it up online.

When I picked myself up off the floor, I went back and bought another one. My neighbors wife works from home a lot, so I told them about it. They went over and bought the last one.

One went in the wife’s office, the other at my desk. They’re well made and comfortable, but I would never pay full price for one. Mrs. Chad loves hers. I was OK with mine, but I just about got whiplash when I fell asleep at the computer.

A couple years later, I found this at another estate sale for $60.

I sat in it and found it be very comfortable and sturdy. Best of all, it had a headrest and enough adjustments to fit just about anyone (I’m 6’5”)! It’s a WorkPro Quantum 9000. They’re about $470 at Office Depot, but you can get one on Amazon for $375. I highly recommend it.

The Mrs. now has one Liberty Task chair in her upstairs office and another at her sewing table downstairs. I spend hours each day on the computer in my quantum 9000 and couldn’t be happier with it!

After all the suggestions and reading the reviews, I settled on the Quantum 9000. I found it online for $269 with free shipping, so if it is as good as you say it should be a great buy,,, Thanks for the info !
