There's heartbreaking news today out of Nashville...Nancy Griffith has passed away, at only 68 years old.

I've been a fan of her music from the moment I first heard her, in the late 70s...but I got to see her live only once, back on May 1, 1989, at a small venue in Baltimore...it was just magical.

Nanci Griffith was brilliant, bright, sweet, and beautiful, and you never heard anyone say a bad word about her. She gave us so many memorable songs, and such terrific performances over the years. May she rest in peace, and may her memory be a blessing to her fans and her loved ones...

Sorry to hear this-I hate to read about anyone passing.

I guess I've lived under a rock most of my life as I've never heard of this lovely lady. I'm sure that's my loss.

Nanci didn't fit easily into any one musical genre. Some of her songs were folk songs, some were country, some were a style that I heard called "folkabilly". She started out when college radio stations and some FM commercial stations were playing "alternative" or folk music, and she was never somebody you'd hear on country music stations or see on CMT.

She was so talented, whether she was singing her own material or interpreting someone else's...

I listened to the songs on the clips that were posted and read the big article on Fox about her.

Never heard any of them, and that was the first time I ever saw John Prine, too. Heard a few of his songs, just never saw him.

Oh well, prolly because we never, ever watch the TV for anything but old (30s-50s) movies.

Perhaps I should peek out from under that rock sometime.

Sad to see her go.

BTW, I loves me some John Prine.

Me too, Rusty. We lost John a little more than a year ago, and now this...I've been bummed out all afternoon...can't believe such a wonderful voice has been silenced.

I spoke this afternoon with the longtime owner of Max's, the Baltimore bar/performance venue where I heard Nanci back in '89. Like everyone else, he was deeply saddened to learn of her passing. He told me that he will always remember how nice she was, not at all pretentious or stuck up or conceited...just a genuinely nice gal.

After our conversation, he texted me a shot of the photo she autographed for him that night... :)

Bob, it's never too late to learn something new. YouTube is chock full of videos of Nanci, and John Prine, and so many others...if you've never heard their music before, it will be a whole new world to you... :)

Sorry, but I don't listen to music, either.

Well, not exactly. I have Pandora and Sirius (never listen to Sirius-it's in case I gotta go somewhere and my Pandora don't work).

On Pandora I have Ernest Tubbs, Hank Snow, Hank Loughlin, Bob Wills, Tommy Duncan, Sons of the Pioneers, Tex Ritter and...well, you get it. My own little world.
