I've found that this Dual Function Home Security Bar from Master Lock works very well for barricading the front door of a hotel room or apartment. If you are concerned about lock bumping or home invasions that start with a door kick, this might be a good tool to keep the bad guys out. At least for long enough to get Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson ready for company.

Product Review: Master Lock Dual Function Home Security Bar

When I was a kid, after a bunch of home invasions, my father installed a more permanent version of this that slipped into sockets in the door and the floor.

I had a discussion of these on another discussion board, and it was stated that similar items were actually ILLEGAL in Chicago. I don't know for sure if that's true, but I suppose it's something to be aware of.

Certain places have bans against some of this stuff, and the building codes prohibit anything that requires a key to open the door from the inside, as it keeps people from exiting during an emergency.

I just learned about "lock bumping" the other day. Did a lot of internet searching and its scary how much info is out there.

Almost like a learners guide for the bad guy

Actually, to exit from the inside, you merely have to pick up the Charley Bar. No fuss, No muss. From the inside, it comes right up and you can go your merry way. The bar only works when someone outside applies force to try and come inside.

Of course, if something happens to you inside your home, it could hamper the ability of rescuers to get in quickly. It's definitely a trade-off. However, if you find yourself in a cheesy breezeway motel, it provides a little extra security.

Those things sometimes only buy you a bit of time at best, and at worst are a false sense of security. A good whack with a battering ram will still tend to take a door down of course, but the real threat is that many home invasions result in forced entry when the homeowner opens the door. It also doesn't do anything to block the many other entry points in most homes - windows or just two minutes with a saw and go in through the wall.

In my part of the country, there are LAWS against Zombies swarming into the room in this way.....

I can assure you, if I'm home and I hear a saw coming through my wall, he won't make it to 2 minutes!
