Best Weapon for Home Defense against Home Invasion?

I got the dog to wake me and he is good at that, and then a Remington 870 folder, Sig 320 and Benelli M1 all within reach.

My dog is a wire haired daschund weighs about 15 pounds. Barks at the drop of an acorn and will rip your throat clean out unless you pet him first.

Guns? None here, honest.

Notwithstanding the celebrated Joe Horn case of some time back (see Joe Horn shooting controversy - Wikipedia), there are certain rules of self-defense, specifically home defense, that normal people who keep guns available for the purpose are supposed to know and totally understand:

You don't shoot people outside of your home, especially if they're running away.

Presuming you live alone, which makes a difference, you don't deliberately enter your home, drunk or sober, if you find the door already open, by key or by kick. Even a drunken person should have sufficient sense to understand that. And if you're too drunk to understand that .... well, you're just an idiot.

If you're likely to have nightmares, correct, don't keep a firearm within easy reach.

That said, I want to see some cases cited where a homeowner is involved in a justifiable home defense shooting and was sued by the perp or the perp's family. I'm not saying it has never happened but I'd like to see those cases, not the ones that have issues of justification.

Main reason I moved up here. Can leave the house unlocked, the car also. Everyone owns guns and everyone knows it. Plus there are two small gun clubs here with over 2K members between them.
...In my opinion, you should never leave a house unlocked--no matter where you are...in some places the chances are a lot higher, something will happen, but sometimes they do happen in ''safe'' areas
..I don't know how many times I've read '''this is a nice, safe place'' from people of when a killer, rapist etc has, entered a house through an unlocked door or window
...the Golden State killer would go through houses when no one was there and made firearms inoperable...so, when he went in to murder, the owners' firearms didn't work
....police get killed and they are armed...just because you are armed, or have firearms nearby, doesn't mean you will automatically be safe....
...I had told my daughters many, many times to lock their doors at college...that's one of the first defense measures....but kids usually don't think of security ......and, as we see in the Idaho murders, where it was a '''safe''' area, the killer got through not one door, but others....

I keep this Sig in my bedside drawer to protect us from a home "intruder". If I'm a victim of a home "invasion", I'll raise my hands and invite the invading army to take whatever they want. :)

That will probably get you killed. Home invaders don't invade in order to steal your Rolex, Timex, or wedding ring. They are there for mayhem.

Many variables, a shotgun is always a good tool.

I apologize for not reading all the responses to your question, and I'm not going to address the "Non-Lethal" aspect.

I have a Remington TAC-13 12 gauge, loaded with reduced recoil #4 buckshot. Mag capacity is 5, and it's an autoloader (for those folks not familiar with it). It's easy to handle in the house, totally intimidating, and I hope I never have to use it.

Check it out.

Best wishes,
