Notwithstanding the celebrated Joe Horn case of some time back (see
Joe Horn shooting controversy - Wikipedia), there are certain rules of self-defense, specifically home defense, that normal people who keep guns available for the purpose are supposed to know and totally understand:
You don't shoot people outside of your home, especially if they're running away.
Presuming you live alone, which makes a difference, you don't deliberately enter your home, drunk or sober, if you find the door already open, by key or by kick. Even a drunken person should have sufficient sense to understand that. And if you're too drunk to understand that .... well, you're just an idiot.
If you're likely to have nightmares, correct, don't keep a firearm within easy reach.
That said, I want to see some cases cited where a homeowner is involved in a justifiable home defense shooting and was sued by the perp or the perp's family. I'm not saying it has never happened but I'd like to see those cases, not the ones that have issues of justification.
