Barney Fife, The Andy Griffith Show?
Remember that Barney only carrier one "bullet" for his revolver in his shirt pocket? Watching an old (aren't they all ) episode of "The Andy Griffith Show" I noticed that Barney is wearing a double dump pouch on his Sam Browne belt.??? What would be the point to that? Just for grins and giggles!

He has to add some weight to his gear,
so any wind will not blow his little frame around, don't you know.
I heard that he wore, lead, lifters !!

There was an episode where Barney had to gain weight for some state mandate. Andy read the fine print and the weight was taken in full gear.

Barney had a total of eight negligent discharges during the run of The Andy Griffith Show. I think I would have been fired after the second one.

I first saw Don Knotts on the Steve Allen Show. Don was a regular on the show and always played a "nervous guy". Pretty simple sight gags that the live audience loved. Shows you how vile TV entertainment has devolved into. I guess we're more sophisticated now.

At least he was an expert at "bullet maintenance". That one round was kept clean and shiny. I remember him lecturing the elderly bank guard about his "bullets turning green".

Barney: " What are those green things in your belt loops?"
Asa Breeney: "Bullets."
Barn: "They're moldy!"
Asa: "I'll get my ball of tin foil."
Barn: " Now this is how a bullet should look."
Asa: "I've only heard about your bullet. It's beautiful."

The "state regs" listed what equipment Barney was to have, and the list included his "whistle and chain". Andy wrapped a length of log chain around his waist under his Sam Brown belt, calling it his whistle chain.

Good thing he lived in Mayberry and not Mt. Airy....
From WFMY News article:
MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — An intruder was shot in the neck during an attempted home invasion in Mount Airy Tuesday, according to police.
The Mount Airy Police Department said they received a call about a shooting around 4:19 p.m. on Andrews Street.
When police arrived, they found the homeowner, Joshua Wade Murphy, 41, standing with a shotgun in his front yard. 26-year-old Daniel Scott Laskey Brown, of Mount Airy, was lying in the front yard with a gunshot wound to his neck.
Investigators identified Brown as the suspect. They said he broke into Murphy's home through the front door as he was armed with a gun. Once Brown came through the front door, Murphy shot him in the neck.
Brown was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition.
After consulting with the Surry County District Attorney’s Office there will be no criminal charges issued at this time.

From '75 to '79 I lived in the North Carolina Piedmont.
The name "Andy Griffith" was revered everywhere I went. They were sure proud of their native son.
PS: I still have a copy of "No Time for Sergeants".

I always thought if Barney & Aunt Bea got into a heated argument, the high pitches would be deafening.
I still watch that show once or twice a week.

I remember one episode where Barney was going to work under cover. He loaded his bullet, put his gun in the six o'clock position of his waistband and blew out the seat of his pants.

Check him out in "A Face in the Crowd" too.
A pretty good Elia Kazan movie and his character is WAY different than Andy Taylor's that we've known for so long.

As I recall in a book on Barney Fife, When it was known that Andy Griffith was getting his own show Knotts contacted him and said he needed a deputy and Andy liked the idea. Andy was supposed to be the funny one and Knotts the straight man but he saw right away that they should switch and Knotts be the funny one. Here’s a parody of the show where Andy and Barney have to deal with Hannibal Lector…

I remember it being an ID tag and chain Which gave them the chance to hid it under his shirt.
"As it turns out, Andy gave Barney a very heavy chain to use under his shirt for his dog tags - the chain with dog tags, uniform and shoes were the only things he was allowed to give Barney to wear at the weigh in, and the chain helped push him over the minimum weight. "

I used to tend bar at a place that opened at 9am. By 10, when WGN showed The Andy Griffith Show, the day drinkers were good and juiced. If it was a “Barney” (meaning an episode with Don Knotts) all was good. If it was a later episode with no Barney they were surly until Bob Newhart started.

Depending upon which season, Barney also carried a Smith & Wesson M&P or Model 10. See post # 23 above.

This episode aired last night on TVLand. I must correct myself after watching it for what seems like the thousandth time. It was his “identification tag and chain . . . “
