A Cannibal Sandwich
Wife and I went to the local Whataburger for lunch today. Woman next to me at the counter, looked like she might have been Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. She ordered an uncooked (raw meat) Whataburger, And got it. I had never seen anything like it, and couldn't imagine Whataburger selling her one, given the possibility of getting a disease from eating raw meat, and the possible legal consequences to Whataburger. And I do know what Steak Tartare is.
Is this something Hawaiians do?

A lot of people eat raw meat. My ex-SIL was a butcher. It wasn't nothing for her to be working on some raw meat and pop a bite into her mouth.

Ruthie's aunt Judy's sandwich of choice is raw ground beef on a bun with mustard and thick slice of onion. She is 80 years old and has been eating them since she was a kid.
She is still among us.

Mom used to do the same thing. She's gone now but it wasn't the beef.

It would only be a cannibal sandwich if other cows ate it.

I haven't seen that since watching "Rosemary's Baby"...I had no idea anyone did it on purpose, or that Whataburger (my go-to cheeseburger source) would allow it...I had an undercooked burger at Red Robin once, and got sick as a dog... ...Ben

My Grandmother ate a pinch of raw hamburger every day. She died at age 106 years old. Fortunately, they saved the baby ....

In the book Alas Babylon, Randy (the hero), when in a hurry would make raw ground round on rye sandwiches. His girlfriend, Liz, called them cannibal sandwiches, and thought they were disgusting.
That was what immediately popped into my mind when I saw the title of the thread. Raw hamburger sandwich.

If I trust the source of the raw hamburger meat I eat it. On a cracker with a shake of salt.
But NOT any from Walmart, I don't buy meat there.

Mom is now 91 and when we drive around the North End of Columbus, she talks about the places and things she did as a kid. The building is still at Hudson & High, but the soda joint is long gone. After a day in class at North HS, they'd walk over there and have a "Cannibal & a Coke" That would be circa 1948 or 49.

I grew up eating bits of raw burger after watching my dad. I haven't eaten any for a while now, but I have no qualms about it. But I still eat raw cookie dough that contains egg.
And I love raw chinook salmon and ahi tuna. Those little rolls with seaweed and rice that they call sushi, not so much.

My FIL was a MD In Vincennes, IN.
One day one of his patients arrives carrying a fruit jar.
He say, Doc , I passed this last night.
H O looks it over and says, looks like a Beef Tapeworm.
The Patient guy thinks a bit and says, a few days ago I was cooking burgers.
I did eat a little raw hamburger.

Some years ago, I got a memorably miserable case of food poisoning, most probably the result of eating an undercooked hamburger. Ever since, I eat only meat on the medium well done side. No pink interior.

Raw ground beef? Nope. Raw fish, properly seasoned? People stand in lines 30+ deep to get the good stuff in my neighborhood.

I've always wondered why, on US TV or Movies, they show someone at the grill, asking "how do you like your burgers?". In Australia, it's not an option. Rissoles (aka burgers), are always fully cooked no matter if they are on the BBQ (aka Grill) or cooked in an electric pan or stove top. Steak is really the only thing here that there's an option.

Same here, and after 60+ years I'm still here. Love barely cooked hamburger and raw cookie dough. My two favorite lines about cooking my burgers and steak are:
"Just past "moo" is fine", and
"So rare a good vet could bring it back to life."

Raw meat, raw cookie dough, done for years, still do. How about homemade eggnog made with totally raw eggs? Grew up on it still fix one occasionally.

Years ago, when actual butchers at supermarkets were common, would ask for a taste before buying steaks. Usually got a piece of raw steak to "taste test". Still eating small samples of raw burger occasionally

Don't know whether to be amused, disgusted or horrified . . . if I leaned Left I might be tempted to think "Maybe there's something to this guns causing blood lust thing !"
No sense of ruining a good piece of meat by cooking it black and to the consistency of boot leather, but I personally like mine done enough it doesn't appear the cook only held it up in front of a picture of fire . . . a nice 'medium barely red in the middle' suffices for me. To each his own

Sounds foul and unsafe for consumption. A few drinks have always been helpful in making poor decisions.

I don’t understand why Whataburger would sell a raw hamburger due to the legalities involved that we’ve all seen in the last number of years regarding the problems stemming from raw meats..
One of my good friends that I worked with in the early 60’s kept raw hamburger at home to eat when he seen fit would always order his hamburger rare at the pool hall. Many times I’ve seen him eat hamburger meat raw. He’s gone from this world since the late 1960’s as he was killed in Viet Nam.
Rest In Peace, Bill Marsh.

I saw a news report today that one variety of tick is spreading, and lives on deer - called the Lone Star tick. A bite from it causes humans to develop an intense allergy to red meat. Apparently no cure for it. I hadn't heard of that before today. The Lone Star Tick and Meat Allergies: What to Know

Which reminded me of this:
Many years ago some friends and I went out for dinner and one ordered a steak. When the waiter asked how he wanted it cooked, he answered "Blue", e introduced to the flame a a sufficient distance to avoid actually being cooked. Not surprisingly, it arrived "rare", no doubt due to health regs.

I recall a day long ago where it was only the dog and myself at home. Considering what to have for dinner, I discovered a steak way down in the bottom of the meat keeper. Unwrapped it, washed it a bit, and gave it a sniff, then offered it to the Shepard. HE turned up his nose at it.
I was about to pitch it in the garbage and suddenly realized he'd never seen raw meat. So, I seared both sides-the aroma had me reconsidering what I was about to do-and offered it again. He grabbed it and retreated to the far side of the yard to dine. He didn't get sick, but I've seen dogs drink raw sewage without issue.

When mom would make meat loaf my dad and I would grab some of the raw hamburger and eat it with salt and pepper. Never bothered us in the least.

Yup!
Raw meat (beef, pork, chicken, fish, eggs) = DELICIOUS!!!
Gotta have a little salt and pepper, I'm not an ANIMAL!
Sometime, I even eat them cooked! (But just a little...)
Been eating that way since I was a kid.
I'm 70 now, no illnesses, no chronic pains, no medications, normal blood pressure, feel great, do all my own work...
Wish I had known how unhealthy it was...

Grew up in Milwaukee WI and in the 60’s/70’s eating cannibal sandwiches was a common treat for us. Quite tasty too. Never got sick though back then we likely got our meat from a local deli or butcher vs grocery counters.
I always thought it was the German side for why we ate it, same as where my lifelong love for liverwurst sandwiches came from but what do I know lol.

I like rare cooked hamburger and steak. But to get an over easy egg I tell them to shine the flashlight on it. Otherwise it comes out crunchy with no yellow to sop up.

One evening our hunting crew of a dozen guys and gals were warming up around a trash can fire on the mountainside when one of the guys walked in with his trophy, a small deer. After the required ribbing, someone sliced up the backstraps and passed around the snacks. Some were even passed over the fire. They were delicious, as were the other bits and pieces. By the time all the stories were told and the stars were high in the sky, there was very little venison left.

43 years in the restaurant business I have seen many things. We had a few regulars that ordered burgers uncooked for years until the health dept. made us cook all ground meats to 160 degrees.

That was the first and only time I’ve ever heard it mentioned until it came up here for discussion.
Alas Babylon…a great book. One of my favorites. I’ve read it a few times.

It's good practice for when the government outlaws stoves.

Raw meat of any type is the greatest hazard to contract an E-Coli infection. Have you ever had an E-coli infection? I did, once, a few years ago I have no idea where the infection came from, but I spent two weeks in the hospital because of it. I do not eat raw meat, never have! I promise you that you will only want to have an E-Coli infection ONCE, and never again.
Do what you want, but the food warnings are real, and for a very good reason.
And quit blaming Walmart for everything bad, they aren't any more likely to have contaminated meat than any other grocery chain.
